Ok, decision made.

I'll be at my office in Cary building the HammerBot this Thursday and the test of the Thursdays in Feburary.  I'll be there, at least 7-10PM, it's not the only time I'll be there but I'll be there, then, for sure.

Anyone interested in joining me to lend a hand or work on their 'bot is welcome.  I have tools to lend, but we'll have to share.  If you have stuff like a soldering iron, bring it.

It's at 302 Davis Grove Cir, Cary, NC, #6012.  The front office closes at six, so you'll have to come in the side.  Fortunately we're right next to the door and have a window facing the outside.  Come up to the door facing Davis Dr. and knock on the window.

Call me if you need help finding it.  919-336-2873.

Let me know if you're coming, but no need to be RSVP or anything formal, like that.

I'm hung up at work, if you were planning on coming out let me know so I can let you know if I have to pull the cord on my own build party.

I couldn't make it today anyway; too much stuff happening. I hope to make it next week.

But if you name it "Mr. Robotto," what will you do when the Z-stage "Styx?"

Ooh, my side. I kill me.

BTW Aoife, since Otto mentioned the name "Otto-bot," you're sort of required to design a new Autobot logo that looks like him.

No response on the "Styx" joke? Wow, tough room.

I really hope to get there this Thursday. It all depends on how Chrissy's writing is going.

I'm in a bit of a funk regarding Big Red, so I need to shake stuff up and do some upgrades. Sooner rather than later, so I'm willing to buy some parts or entire extruder/rod kits, etc.

So, Bill et al, what's the first thing you'd do? Upgrade to a Wades (or MB now has a "stepstruder," but direct drive from a NEMA17? I am dubious), put in a set of Acme rods, or sidestep that with a Z-rider, or whut?

I'm open to suggestions, and suggestions for sources as well.

Depends on what you consider you biggest printing issue.

If the Z-wobble/binding is still a show stopper, then Acmes or z-rider
(did he ever finish the instructions on that thing?)

I do recommend the stepper upgrade. I have the makergear and it is great.
It is silent and never gets hot, I don't know why the hell MBI feels the need
for direct drive, that's why their new "invention" gets so hot.

Not a fan of any of MBI's current innovations. The MK5 is ok but the hot-end
is ridiculous overkill. My makergear heats up in 20 seconds and I don't need
a relay. The new Z-Stage is better. But the stationary extruder kills the build area.

I would say:
1. Stepper Extruder.
2. Z-axis upgrade. (z-rider or acme)
3. x-y upgrade. (bearing lowrider)
Or say screw it and build a prusa.:-)

How far did you get with the holiday prusa?

My biggest issue is the urge to play around. (that's what she said...)

After that I'd say it's the occasional extruder stalling issue, which is prob. the need for a new idler wheel. I think I'll just go to Makergear.

After that I'll look into the Z-rider. I have the parts for the original Mendel, I just need to move forward putting it together.

I only printed a few pieces of the holiday Prusa before extruder issues and lack of holiday spirit derailed me.

I decided on a Wade's and now I'm flippin' confused. they're saying that I need a Polulu stepper driver? I thought the main extruder board would work a stepper by connecting all four motor outs?

I'm okay with getting a kit and even hobbing the bolt if I have to, but I'd rather not order a new driver board.

I have an extra MBI driver. One note tho it makes the motor run hot-ish.
You can run it off the EC using the two H-Bridges with a special firmware.
That makes the motor run very hot. You might can play with the drive voltage
of this MBI driver to keep the motor cooler. The pololu driver runs cooler than
the MBI's version.

You don't really need the microstepping that pololu offers for the extruder.

What kit are you getting?

Made any progress?

I meant to mention that I have an extra acrylic "middle" if you want
it.
It helps a bit on the vibration noise of the x-axis motor (The loudest
motor on the makerbot) by replacing the wood "middle" board (which
acts
like the sound board of a violin) with a much more ridged plastic that
dampens vibration.

Jeff, I'd offer it to you but you do have to take the bot *completely*
apart
to swap the piece in. If you'd like one I'd be glad to cut one for
you.

I've gotten nowhere.  I broke my big toe (exactly a week ago, five minute ago) and have been laid up.  You'd think 'bot building is something one could do with a broken toe... and you'd be right.  However, not sure I trusted my vicodin-addled brain with the task.

I'm happy with it, though, I've come to terms with a million half-finished projects.  They'll be done when they're ready to be done. :D

Nope.

We're dropping that office, they were adding a new insurance requirement that was, in effect, adding 20% to the rent.

Don't need anything tho may have kapton tape ... got 2 different thickness rolls in my 'bot kit.  Haven't gotten far enough to know whether I need it all tho.

Either way, you could have some if you wanted/needed it this weekend and lend it back if I needed it when I got that far.

The wide ~1" stuff is used to assemble the PET belt for the ABP. I
understand that the failure rate of the belts is such that you will need
all of it. :-) That doesn't mean there isn't enough to give some out.
I think a lot of people give up on the ABP for anything but small prints.

Where is a good place to get precision rod? I was going to go to
Fastenal but I know they are much more expensive. Is McMasterC
a good place for that? Where are the robot people getting their stuff?

Also I have a 4"wide roll of CCK (cheap chinese kapton) coming in a
week or so. I'm told ABS sticks to it like glue.

Jeff-

I could use 2 of the 5779K782 (6 position nylon Manifolds with Push-to-Connect Tube Fittings) at $18.55 each. One 36" rod of 8974K153 (6061 Aluminum rod, 1.125" dia) at $20.66, and one 13" rod of 8916K27 (aluminum bronze alloy 954, 1.25 OD, 0.25" wall thickness) at $36.11. All are in stock, and available for shipping tomorrow. That's about $100 plus tax and shipping. If you don't want to add all that to your order (gonna kill your shipping), let me know and I'll place it myself today.

Thanks!
