... Almost. Very, very close ...

Started the build of my MakerBot Cupcake Ultimate kit on 7/11 and just
finished it today. Had a delay for designing and laser-cutting an
acrylic board to mount all the electronics on. Had another delay more
recently due to yellow jackets in the basement. (Ow!)

Today I finished the wiring and tested it out. Steppers all work,
heater works, plastruder (mark 5) works, and I was able to extrude some
ABS! Woohoo! So everything is working ... with one small exception.

One of my ribbon cables from the motherboard to the stepper controller
is flakey. When I was putting them together, I cracked the top piece of
one of the IDC connectors. Didn't think that would make a difference
for the electrical connection, but that's the cable that's having a
problem. (Verified by swapping around ribbon cables and stepper
boards.) I also tried removing the IDC connectors, trimming the ribbon
cable, and re-attaching them. Still flakey.

So, before I order some additional ribbon cable and connectors, does
anyone have a spare cable lying around that I could borrow or have so I
can to do a test print?

Tom,

Yep, the 10-pin ones that go from the motherboard to the stepper boards.
The same 2 x 5-pin connectors shown here:
http://reprap.org/wiki/MakeIDCCable#Rainbow_Cables

Are you in or anywhere near Durham?

Mike: I will drop off connectors at the Splat- back on the table with all my crap in it, behind the Jacob's Ladder. Tonight.

Thanks, Jeff! Tom hooked me up, but I appreciate your offer, too.
I'll be heading back to the basement after I get some dinner to see if I
can get my first test print to, you know, print.

Well, I'm not doing cubes. built the tinyISP, but I can't burn the bootloaders due to a permissions problem. Found out how to fix that in etc/udev/rules.d, but can't figure out how get permission to save a new rules file to that folder. I don't know much about Linux. Shit.

Swapped out the extruder board, got the same error. So if anything I'm guessing it's the motherboard that needs the bootloader reburnt, if that will even help.
Wait, I think I still have another motherboard somewhere. More later...

Hmm, thats odd.

Have you tried a different cat5 and also leaving everything else unhooked from the EC?
Any EC lights?

Dug up the old MB, plugged it in. Works fine, finds toolhead. Firmware is old, though: v. 2.2.

NOW I get heating and heat control, but no motor runnage. Tested the motor supply: 12 v. Tested the motor: 50ish ohms. Motor does not run. Plugged in my old motor (tested at 45 ohms): runs fine.

So maybe a crap motherboard (I have to fix those permissions somehow and reburn it to see), and probably a crap motor as well. Jesus.

Bre, Bre, why hast thou forsaken me?

More tests on that motor.

Cubes are totally in!!! (At least tonight.)

Here's a pic I just posted of my 'bot and first test print:

P.S. I tested my ribbon cable when I got back from getting one from Tom.
3 of the 10 pins didn't make a connection which pretty much explains why
it was flakey.

I believe I have a spool of this cable, one of the few things that wasn't stolen with the original bot.

I'm available; I pretty much just need a day and time.
I wouldn't mind picking your brain about pushing stl's back to an editable format- Netfabb, right? Or was it Meshlab?

Anyway, suggest some times.

I'd love to, but unfortunately I'm out of town this weekend so I won't
be able to make it. In fact, I'm pretty much booked for the rest of the
weekends in August, too. But I might be up for a weeknight or maybe
bring my 'bot to the Splat Space open meeting and play there.
