Hello to everyone on the technoLanguages email group!

I hope this finds you all well.

I was wondering if anyone is interested in starting up this group again with some discussions about language teaching and technology?

For those of you teaching asian languages, you may want to check out the new Technology Enhanced Language Learning group that the Asia Ed Foundation is running.

For language teaching in general though, we can use this group - of you are interested!

Over at the TELL group the thread is about iPads. We could have a discussion about that there too if you would like to - anyone interested? iPads seem to be a bit of hot topic at the moment.

So, please send app suggestions, ideas for using iPads etc and let's get this group moving again.

It'll take some contribution from others though, so I won't want to bother you again if there are no responses. Up to you!

Also, if you would like to be taken off this list, then you should be able to do that via the disclaimer at the bottom.

Hope all is well with all of you and you are enjoying 2012 so far!

Realy interested as well, but I am back as a generalist teacher but trying to use some CLIL in the classroom.  Would love to get our new language teacher involved as well.

Count me in.

I'm interested too, Jess. Don't have an iPad but it's only a matter of
time - particularly if some good language-teaching resources start
popping up.

Hi all,

Could i take this opportunity to put in a plug for putting cameras in students' hands and creating  a 60second video about science with a LOTE soundtrack.

I have created special LOTE categories with cash prizes as part of the www.60secondscience.net video competition.

Last year we got some great LOTE entries, and I am very keen to encourage cross-curriculum studies involving Languages.

Winning LOTE entries from previous years are viewable on the website.

Register by 1August, Upload by 26August. Free entry, all age groups catered for.

Kind regards,
Brendan

Brilliant, thanks for that feedback! Nope, no need to further register - it's just using this email group. So to get an email to everyone on the list - and there are about 120 people - then you just send an email to technol...@googlegroups.com

you can also just hit reply - tho do remember that your reply will go to everyone (unless you specify otherwise) so please don't fill up people's inboxes with an email that just says 'thanks for that' for example. Make sure what you are posting has some substance and if you really want to send a thanks, then you can send it to that person privately. Just helps stop everyone's inboxes filling up with too much unnecessary stuff!

Right, so let's kick off!

iPads - are you using them for language teaching and learning? How? What do you like about them?

Discuss! :-)

I am using iPad to teach reading and writing at the moment, plus getting students to record their Chinese speaking.

Using apps like “Chinese Writer, Learn Chinese with bookworm, Make Dice, Word Cloud, Type Drawing, Type it” for reading and writing, “iTalk & Sound Cloud” for listening and speaking.

All these apps are very easy to use, student would not have any difficulty to use it, and for the listening and speaking apps, you can actually link them onto twitter, facebook, or all the them can actually sent out as email attachment. So it is a good method to keep track with students work and assess them as well.

Oh anyone knows what’s iTune U and how it works? Can I use them for presentation in my class?

Thanks J

Me again!

Just thought I'd put these links out there for iPads -

1. Appitic is a site that lists over 1300 education related apps and puts them into categories under multiple intelligences and blooms: http://appitic.com/

2. Also, there is http://ipadeducators.ning.com and online learning network for educators interested in iPads.

hope they are useful for you all!

Hi Roberta and everyone else!

I've attached a document about getting started with iPads-  I put it together for some Chinese teachers so just ignore the front page, but after that it will all be helpful to you when it comes to getting things set up.

Also, as for apps to start out with - get some free drawing ones, and voice recording ones when you do get your iPad. There are lots of apps for French there so it will just be a matter of searching - unless anyone out there has a list for French apps that they like?

Anyway, I hope the guide helps a bit!

What else are people doing with iPads?

Here is a presentation I put together about iPads for languages - its got some general app suggestions and ideas for using them: https://docs.google.com/present/edit?id=0AT9K36bhLT3QZGM4czY0cjJfNjlma3F2NXBmNQ

Happy iPadding!

Thanks Jess. You have so many good ideas, I really like I can have time to try them one by one. Maybe in the holiday.
