Hello everyone!

I've set up the Seven Wonders of the Whiteboard Challenge for any of you who are interested.  Here's the description:

Are you new to using an interactive whiteboard (IWB)? Have you used one for ages but want some other ideas? Are you using an IWB regularly but know you could use it better? Then you are invited to join the Whiteboard Challenge!

The aim of this challenge:

To improve the use of interactive whiteboards in the classroom and to stimulate more discussion about how they can best be used.

What the challenge involves:

This Interactive Whiteboard Challenge will run for 7 weeks initially, starting on Monday August 11th. Each week there will be a new task set by someone who is an experienced whiteboard user. They will present their challenge in whatever way they like - it might be a short video, a screen cast a podcast. You then need to go and use whatever they have presented in your classroom that week. Record your efforts and write a blog post about how you went. At the end of the challenge you will have 7 blog posts about your whiteboard practice, and lots of other blog posts on similar topics available to you to read. Title your blog post 'Whiteboard Challenge Week 1' etc or something very similar so it is easy for others to identify your post.

For more info and to sign up go to the Whiteboard Challenge Wiki: http://whiteboardchallenge.wikispaces.com

Also, don't forget the technoLanguages social network where you can join up, have a profile page, leave comments on other teachers' pages, join a group for teachers of your languages and heaps of other things. There are aleady over 70 members , so come and join us!

I hope this finds you all well and using technology in your classes somehow this week! :-)

Hi Jess and other TechnoLOTErs,

I had to laugh when I read your latest email...
I have just had a very chaotic lesson with a Year 8 Chinese class, trying to use the Interactive Whiteboard for students to show presentations to their classmates...This class is the second disaster for them for the week...for the same kind of reasons: Difficulty finding/using keys to open the IWB screens (Why do we have different keys for each screen and why are they kept in a locked and messy office?), difficulty accessing the school network from my laptop (wireless connection not working), difficulty in viewing Word 2007 Powerpoints because my school-issued laptop hasn't been upgraded yet....I have resolved some but not all of these problems but would strongly advise having Plans B,C and D ready to be put into action instantly to overcome the disadvantages of trying to use ICTs which don't work....

On a much brighter note, I also went to a PD session yesterday run by EMR for Gamemaker (Languages Online) which I really enjoyed and which I felt was really useful and effective. I think the games which are currently available would be great for both teachers and students to use and there are some new things including a cartoon/film type activity which looks fantastic and are coming by the end of the year. I hadn't got the previous versions of the Gamemaker to work but these are really straightforward. Hope this encourages some who, like me, get (too) easily discouraged when things don't work as they should!
Regards Elizabeth
PS If any other teachers would like to create/ share Chinese language games based on the topics in Ni Hao, please feel free to contact me...maybe we can encourage each other!

Dear Elizabeth;

ICT disasters do happen often; I’ve encountered a lot and felt for you.

I attended the same PD workshop last year and have been using the Gamemaker since (it does not always work on the school’s computers, though), both my students and I enjoy it very much. We use Ni Hao and Chinese Made Easy.

Cheers,

Barbara

Thanks Barbara, ???
I should also mention the "Portal maker" feature which I think would be a really great way of distributing and keeping track of your materials for various classes. If you make a portal (like a "main page" on Internet) then it may not be a good idea to give the students editing rights in case they delete your materials...just give them viewing rights. Regards to all, Elizabeth

Thank you, Liz;

I use the school’s intranet where I save my work in the resource’s box and the students can’t do anything but viewing/playing.  My girls like ‘Tetris’ the best.

Have a nice weekend, everybody;

Barbara
