“Sir, we’ve done everything — NAAC, NBA, NIRF, ERP, MoUs.
But students still don’t improve!”

That one line?
A tragic + comic masterpiece.
Straight from the script of Indian Higher Education 2025.

Everyone’s performing.
No one’s learning.
And the joke…
is on the student.

I heard that.
Campus after campus.
Principal after principal.
Chairman after chairman.

And somewhere between
the forced smiles...
and the lukewarm tea served with rankings talk...
I stopped pretending.
Stopped nodding.
Stopped clapping for the circus.

Because I couldn’t unsee what I saw.

This Staged Circus:
Where no one claps.
But everyone smiles.
Everyone nods.
Everyone acts like it matters.
Like they’re building futures.
But deep down...
they know it’s just noise wrapped in paperwork.

You know the lines.
Stuck in Rituals.
Not in Impact.

Here are Few:

We say: “4-year degree is better.”
Why? Because the government said so.
Not because students asked for it.

We say: “All students must do a project.”
Reality: Bought from the same shop that sells
"Xerox" Notes
and Final Year Panic.

We say: “Industry visits are essential.”
Truth: It’s a picnic.
Destination: Resort.
Learning: Nil.
Selfies: Unlimited.

We conduct: Board of Studies meetings.
Who attends? Professors and Industry "Experts"
Who still think ChatGPT is cutting-edge…

We invest: Lakhs in ERP systems.
Purpose? To automate mediocrity.
Attendance in.
Impact out.

We mandate: “Faculty must publish papers.”
Outcome: Journals that charge ₹3,000 per paper
Peer-reviewed?
Ofcourse.

We preach: “OBE is fully implemented.”
But: POs, COs, PSOs — copied from
college who just got NBA.

We boast: “We’ve built Innovation Cells.”
Yet: No real patent, no product, no pitch.
Just whiteboards with
old Steve Jobs quotes.

We claim: “We’ve signed MoUs with industry.”
Truth: One photo, one file, one forgotten folder.
No internship, no input, no impact.

We organize: “Mega Job Fairs!”
Results: 1000 resumes, 30 offers,
average salary ₹12,000.
Everyone claps.
Everyone Snaps.
Get 100 Likes.

We run: “Incubation Centres.”
But: Students can’t explain what a startup is.
Pitch deck = PPT with flying text.

We advertise: “Global Tie-ups with Foreign Universities.”
In reality: One Zoom call.
One photo,
with a Foreigner.
And Parents Impressed.

This isn’t reform.
This is performance.

And we’ve become very good at it.

And I wonder...
How long will we keep polishing the illusion?
How long before someone pulls the curtain?

Are we educating?
Or are we executing rituals because Government Said So?

Are we building futures?
Or just adding more pages to the NAAC file?

If you’re still here reading,
I know you feel it too.

This isn’t a post.
This is a mirror.

And if it makes you uncomfortable,
Good.

Regards,
Dr. S.S. Dey

The big problem we have is: our plans and thoughts, our actions and our words are not aligned. Our policies often are mismatching with our plans and needs. We contradict ourselves and it fails us.

Higher education needs to be job oriented, creative or innovative to stay competitive. Both performers and learners have opportunities, no doubt about it.
