Hi there,

Sorry if spamming; please skip reading if you haven't applied for passport renewal.

My question is regarding renewal of my (Indian) passport while being here in Israel. I naively assumed that it should be possible to do so with online application, along with some scheduled appointment to Tel Aviv mission.
What I have done till now: Filled an online application form that has a slightly confusing name "Application form for Indian passport at Indian mission/posts" and have duly received an automated email that confirms that, albeit with horrible grammar and extreme unclarity. Also, the word renewal doesn't occur anywhere.
What I am confused about: The email as well as website says that the date and time of the appointment would be written in the application form. Unless it is written in some invisible font, I can't find it anywhere in the form. That the website is confusing is the most generous comment one can make.
What I would be grateful for: If any one can tell what exactly is the procedure to get an appointment for this. Naively again, I guess I can simply go the Tel Aviv mission, with forms printed; but it doesn't say so anywhere.

Thanks indeed for your time.

Cheers,
Shashank

Hi Shashank,

I had renewed my passport last year in July at the Tel Aviv embassy. At that time, there was no option of filing the forms online. I had to print out the forms and then visit the embassy. You don't have to take prior appointment for that; just turn up at the time given here (http://www.indembassy.co.il/pages.php?id=72#.Vt7wix-6z74). Usually it is not very crowded at the embassy. It took me close to two months to get my passport. Even though the website is confusing, I found the staff at the embassy very helpful :) You can also call them to check, in case the rules have now changed.

Let me know if you need any further information regarding this.

Best,
Yadu

Thanks so much, Yadu. Your answer clarifies  the things a lot, indeed.
May I trouble you further with couple of queries.
1. My Israeli visa was issued only for 6 months because my passport was valid only for 11 months when I sought the visa. Somehow, neither the people in Israeli embassy in London nor here in Technion explained me that then. So now, I "must" get Israeli visa before April, and for that I "must" get renewed passport before April. Is there any way to push forward this, like Tatkal?
2. My current passport has the address of a hostel in IIT-D, which obviously would also need to change. By any chance do you know if the procedure is complicated for that, like attestation.
Thanks once again for your help, Yadu.

Cheers,
Shashank

Hi Shashank,

When I applied last year, there was no tatkal scheme for passports here. But you could talk to them and see if they can do it fast. Typically the delay is when your data has to be entered online. When you submit the forms, then I think someone at the embassy does that. So it is possible that with the online forms, that delay has been reduced. You can talk to the staff at the embassy and they are usually considerate regarding these things, at least in my experience.

It is not necessary to change the hostel address if you don't want to. I had my hostel address in my old passport and I didn't change it in my new passport. I don't remember what the required documents are for changing the address in the passport, but I remember that I didn't have any of those documents. So, at the place where they asked the permanent address, I gave the address in the passport (yes, it is a little odd!) and in the place where they asked the current address, I gave my home address. There was a police verification at my home address, but this was only after I had received my new passport.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Yadu

Hi Pushparaj,

I am not sure about online application. But, I have submitted hard copy of application with necessary documents in embassy of india, tel aviv. Last week I got my new passport. It is very simple procedure and it takes two months time to get your new passport.

Good luck.

To add to what has been said (mainly to clarify it), a rough procedure is this.

0. Register yourself with the Indian abroad missions. Such as here: http://www.indembassy.co.il/register.php
1. Decide the purpose(s) of renewal. e.g. expiry of passport, change of permanent address, marital status etc.
2. Look into the appropriate forms from here: http://www.indembassy.co.il/pages.php?id=73#.V7He7mUmVuY
3. Go through the general checklist of required documents (same page) as well as specific information based on your case in (1). e.g., in case of change of permanent address you would need to provide names & contact details of two local Indian citizens to vouch for your proposed new permanent address. You would also need to mention the nearest police station that would inquire your address.
4. Call them at the dedicated number Yadu mentioned (i.e. 03-7620720 between 2pm to 4pm from Monday to Thursday only ) and check you aren't missing anything. Submit the forms personally at Indian embassy at HaYarkon Street. I think from Tel Aviv Savidor train station you can get 161 to get very close to the address.

Notes:
a. The procedure takes 60 days +/- a week from the starting of submission. Some documents could be provided later on.
b. They would ask your Israeli mobile number primarily to send you the message once your new passport arrives. They wouldnt use email even if you ask for it (or if you don't use your mobile phone often).
c. The passport issuing authority is Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv and this is written on the first page. So if you plan to stay in Arabic countries, factor in that too.

Cheers,

Shashank,

There might be someone who may have a physical copy of it. It is different than the one online. Additionally they have other forms and documents customized for renewal. Call and ask about it if they can email it to you.

Hi,

AFAIK, the details of such applications remain the same, so please see the earlier emails in this regard.
Hence, you will typically apply for a new passport at least 2.5 months before you need it for some other reasons. Here, you will probably need the new passport by June 18, 2018. Also note that you do not need a valid visa to stay in Israel as long as you book an appointment with the ministry, and let them know that you will have the new passport soon. This implies you can even apply in June, be without a valid visa till July and get new visa in August on the new passport.

TL;DR;
Apply for a new passport at the end of March 2018.

Cheers,

The question is ambiguous perhaps. :-) And please do not use 'Sir'. :-)

If you mean Nov & Dec in 2017, then surely yes. If it's 2018, then I think you should need a new passport.

You can apply 12 months before the expiry or passport or 36 months post expiry. Passport portal in India is quite detailed and it answers majority of questions except Embassy process. Its same irrespective of the point of contact (i.e. PSK or embassy). Embassy process has been already detailed out in past replies.

If I would travel to India then I would get it done from there as PSK takes 4-7 days max to deliver the new passport. Not like older days :)
