Hello,

I am glad to have found this group. There is a treasure of information available here, and you all are very helpful.

I recently completed my PhD here in US and have been considering Technion for my postdoc. I was wondering if coming to Israel would affect my chances to find a job in US in future. Therefore, I wanted to ask you all if you are aware of any Indian citizens (preferably from Engineering) who went to Technion for their postdoc and were able to come back to US for a job after completion of their program. It would be very helpful if someone is willing to share his/her experience and legalities in this regard.

Also, I see that my postdoc salary would be about 10k shekels. Is this tax-free? If not, how much would it be after taxes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Vinod,

Many many congratulations for getting the postdoc in Israel.
As of my knowledge in future there will be no problem in getting job in US after doing postdoc in Israel. I know some people (not from engineering background) who have finished their post doc in Israel and now a days they are working in USA.

Regarding  salary, generally it is tax free in Israel (in Technion upto 12K) but you can also confirm from your host regarding this issue

Feel free to ask your queries.

Good luck.

amar

I don't know about US, but I surely know of a person who did his PhD
(CS) in the US, did a postdoc here, and went for a job in the UK as
faculty. Re salary, what Amar said is true.

I guess Sunder is talking about me :)
All said, Israel is a great place to do a postdoc. However, it does make a difference, I suppose in some areas which are highly competitive (like maybe theoretical CS) if you are physically present in the US just because the US universities have so many good candidates, they may want to save on flight tickets for interviews. That said, if you do a good postdoc here (and these are excellent places), your chances of landing a good job (US and elsewhere) are probably higher than a moderate postdoc in the US!

Amitabh

Thank you all for this information. I guess my question is how exactly (e.g. which visa?) a person can come to US after the postdoc in Israel? If someone goes out of US after completing a degree, that student will lose the F1-OPT status to work in US. The only ways to come back to US could be (a) if your company sponsors your H1B visa (which would not happen right away after you join the company) or (b) you decide to do a second postdoc and come back to US as a J1 research scholar (relatively easier to get J1 Visa but very difficult to convert to H1B once you have completed your second postdoc). It would be very helpful if you all can point me to someone who has actually come back to US from Technion for a non-academic job. My wife studies here in US, so it is very important for me to come back to work in US. Again, I appreciate suggestions from all of you.

Hi,
You shouldn't be worried about that at all. 9000 NIS  is way more than sufficient for a family' s decent living.

Dear Ashutosh,

Congrats for the offer of postdoc at the Technion.
I would also say that 9000 NIS/month is definitely a good (if not the best) salary.

Let me give you an idea of the major expenses : You can certainly get a good private 1 bedroom apartment in 3000 (in fact, in less than that) including utilities. The most expensive health insurance is 2.3USD per day per person. So, for 3 of you (no discount for an infant), it would cost no more than 828 NIS/month (rough calculation, 1 USD = 4 NIS). Usual grocery stuff can be easily managed for somewhere between 1000 and 1500.
Other than these, there would not be any major expenses (even the vaccinations for your child would not be very costly).
So, I guess, you can certainly live a wonderful life with your salary.

If you can manage (often not given) to get a family apartment on the Technion campus, then that would save a lot of your money (as of today, it costs about 2000/month and it is all bills inclusive).

Best,
Rahul

Hi SAM,
First of all many many congratulations for getting postdoc in a good Institute.
Regarding your salary first confirm with your host that how much he is paying to you. Generally in wiseman and in its neighbourhood the living cost is higher than the Haifa (from my place).
Again confirm with your host if there is a possibility to get accommodation in the dormitory (it will be less expensive as compared to outside). Generally food and other stuffs will cost you approximately 1000 -1200nis, if single.  Apartment rent is quite high in Israel that may cost you from 2500-3000nis in that area. Rest of the things depends on your personal interests.
Feel free to ask your queries.
Thanking you.

Best of luck,
amar

Hi Sam,

I thought I could add my two pennies, after joining Technion recently. If you are coming from EU, and you rely on online sources (like http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/city_result.jsp?country=Israel&city=Haifa) to compare with your base city, I would humbly add, Haifa is significantly more expensive than claimed there. (Hence probably also W/man). In other words, salary here is comparable to Germany but cost of living is much higher.
Secondly, unlike many places around the world, salaries on same level of postdocs can vary a lot in Israel (approx. 30% variation is possible, my Prof. told me that (legal) upper bound is ~12,000). This huge variation is unthinkable if you are in EU.

Cheers,
Shashank
