Hello - I am very interested in breaking into the technical writing
field. I have no clue where to begin, however after looking at some
open positions the main key seems to be mastering the software in
demand first such as Robohelp, Framemaker,...etc. Can someone suggest
websites and or resources for training on these products? Also with no
experience - what it the best route to take to get your foot in the
door for this type of career? Are there companies that offer
internships for this type of position? I have a BSIT and am looking to
put it to use ASAP. Would love to gain any insight or assistance with
resources to point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance for
any time and or attention to my cause and have a great day.

There are plenty of how-to books on learning tools. You could search Amazon, or maybe look at Kevin Siegal's site,  http://www.iconlogic.com/. As for internships and opportunities, try searching indeed.com. You could submit internship ideas to companies if they don't already offer them. The best route is to put together a convincing portfolio. You could do that by simply writing documentation for a non-profit entity.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for getting back to me - on the portfolio, how detailed does it
have to be - I am looking for Work-At-Home jobs online - the examples
that they are requesting as part of the interview process can those be
added to the folio? Or upon being hired to do a job can I add all of
that as well to it? There is a lot of request for WordPress work.
Should I stick to one topic or as I get assignments just add the
pieces in? As I mentioned earlier - totally new to this - so I will
have a lot of questions for each step going forward. I am not sure if
you are up for the task of personally taking on the barrage of
questions so I will be adding new posts as well. Thanks again for your
time and attention to this matter and have a great day.
