Hello Techné  Members,

I am interested in hearing from schools around the country who have may have already invested in Resin SLA 3D printers. We have had some initial enquiries in Glasgow and, as far as we know, nobody has actually bought one but we are keen to keep ahead of the curve with regards the introduction of this new technology.

Any advice or information that you can share on model choice, safe use, material safety, ventilation etc would be greatly appreciated.

Neill

Hi Penny,

NuVu have 2 Elegoo Saturn resin printers & they don’t use them, they did, but they were just too messy & required so much more time spent on them with regards to cleaning/prep/setup so have sat idle for around 2 or so years now compared to the Prusa FDM printers that are pretty much in daily use.

I serviced the resin printers about 3-4 months ago as they were talking about using them again – But with the cost & time involved they have again sat idle.

They have the charcoal smell absorbers that are charged via USB to help with the odour control (still smells somewhat) & you need to use 90%> IPA to help with the cleaning of the prints as well as the plate/vat/FEP film & have gloves on etc. to avoid skin irritation.

If you don’t buy a dedicated UV wash & cure system, you can ‘ghetto’ it by using sealable food storage tubs with 90%> IPA to wash the resin parts off when removed for the build plate (2 tub wash method in better & then use a black storage crate lined with reflective material & a UV light/strips around 405nm to then cure a ‘washed’ print. * If using water washable resins, change IPA tubs mentioned above for warm them cold water before curing*

**All of the info above is ghetto!!!! (apart from buying a dedicated wash & cure system!)**

The resins themselves have a short shelf life (1 year at best most times) & need to be stored away from light/UV, be kept cool & be kept safe – Data sheets for the resins can be downloaded from the manufacturers usually if buying a good known brand.

Regards,

Morning Penny,

We do have a Mars Elegoo resin printer, we do not use it as much as the normal 3D printers and there is a lot of clean up and we have also found they are not as reliable but when they do work they are great for small detail.

Thanks

Leigh
