Hi Physics Educators and Technicians,

We are looking for educators and technicians currently working in Scottish schools and colleges and involved with N5 physics to attend a workshop on practical methodologies. The aim of this is to encourage knowledge exchange through the trialling of equipment on specific concepts. Feedback from our previous workshops at the university and recent IOP Stirling meeting has been very positive.

Our work at the University of Strathclyde Institute of Education is being supported by a UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) grant. If participants are willing to share their views via an anonymous MS form, this would be used to inform research which has been ongoing with funding from the IOP. There is no obligation to complete this, and people are not precluded from attendance if they wish not to. The main purpose of this workshop is to create an environment where those working in physics education can collaborate and share ideas.

Details of the workshop:

Date - Saturday 15th June 2024

Time(s) - Two sessions are available:

  • 09:30-12:00
  • 13:00-15:30
  • You can attend both!
  • Please arrive at the start of the session for a short intro on what is expected

Physics concepts - Both sessions will have equipment set up for the following:

  • speed and acceleration
  • electricity (circuit rules and ohm’s law)
  • waves

Travel expenses - up to £10 per person (claim form required)

Food and drink - Refreshments and snacks will be available at each session (note that if attending both, you will need to provide your own lunch)

Participants are welcome to work through as much as they wish within the session time, however it has been our experience that to fully interact with the equipment and to engage in discussions with others, speed and acceleration would be best completed on its own, but electricity and waves could be covered together in the time of one session.

In order to attend, please complete this form as we need your contact details to ensure we can send any updated information and for room booking and catering purposes.

Please pass this on to any colleagues you think may be interested. If you have any questions, please get in touch with us through the principal investigator Iain Moore using the email address: iain.g...@strath.ac.uk.

If you do not wish to participate, thank you for your time.

Best wishes,

Strathclyde Institute of Education Practical Methodologies in Physics Team
