Hi,
my name is Caroline Butler and I am the Lead Science Technician for Scottish Borders Council. I am a registered science technician, RSciTech, and am an active member of STAC (Scottish Technicians Advisory Council),
ASE (Association of Science Education) National Science Laboratory Technician Committee and the ASE Scotland Committee.
As part of the ASE Scotland Committee we are highlighting its new approach to membership and the associated benefits.
There are some great opportunities across the association for technicians with professional learning and registration, technician resources, the chance to write and contribute to professional journals, networking
opportunities and collectively (and most importantly!) the chance to champion the school technician profession throughout the UK.
Please read the below information from the ASE Scotland Committee, and get in contact if you would like any further information.

The ASE (Association for Science Education) has implemented a new approach to its membership subscription structure. This is a simplified and inclusive membership model that offers greater affordability and flexibility
for all – and at a significantly reduced price.
New membership rates are as follows:
-
ASE Membership: From 1st September 2023, there is a flat subscription rate of £45 per year. Regardless of your educational setting or role (primary, secondary science, trainers, consultants, etc), you will enjoy the same comprehensive membership
benefits.
-
Free Student and Probationer Teacher Membership: ASE is offering student and probationer teachers
free membership. Furthermore, ASE is offering a 50 per cent discount for their third year of membership, to support them during this crucial phase of their professional development.
-
Technician Membership: ASE is offering a reduced rate membership fee of £25 per year from 1st September 2023. Technicians will receive the same membership benefits as all other ASE members. Subscriptions for retired teachers will also be £25.
The benefits of joining ASE are:
- Regular e-update on news, research and events
- Member’s magazine (Education in Science) with insights and features
- Scottish regional e-updates on local news and events
- Access to free or discounted professional learning seminars
- Free access to resources and guidance
- Exclusive content in podcasts and webinars
- Pathway to registered status: RSci, RSciTech and CSciTeach
- Member discounts to ASE events – including ASE’s annual conference and partner organisations.
- There are opportunities to have your say on national consultations and surveys
- Opportunities to engage and learn within ASE: presenting, writing, representation and advocacy
- Option to add on an ASE Journal or Hub of your choice for an additional fee
- Free public liability insurance to cover you in the classroom or the prep room, from practical’s and school trips up to £10m
Each year, ASE Scotland has ensured your voice is heard at the Learned Societies’ Group on Scottish STEM Education; presented themed online/face-to-face conferences; delivered termly newsletters; offered teach
meets and visited teacher training institutes. Joining ASE is a great way to meet and connect with other science education professionals; ensure your voice is heard and help shape the future of science education in Scotland; enhance your science teaching/technical
skills and knowledge, and embed your practice in evidence-based pedagogy.

Kind regards,
ASE Scotland Committee
