[techmeetup-discuss] Shall we cancel TechMeetup Edinburgh next week?

Hi all,

Right, need some help. Next weeks TechMeetup Edinburgh is looking to be a bit difficult to pull off - TechCrunch Edinburgh is on that evening (which I have to be at) and Hasan is away. There's a bunch of visitors coming to the city for all the events on next week and it might be quite tricky to have free reign up on Floor 8 of Appleton Tower (it's the Informatics Commercialisation suite and they'll likely have lots of meetings).

So, what do we do?

1) Hands up who wants to have an event? I'll take silence to mean you don't mind if we cancel it.

OR

2) Has anyone got suggestions and initiative to organise something else? For example it would be easy to arrange a hack evening, or a show-and-tell workshop (HTML5, MongoDB, Scala, iPad UI class) and maybe take things a bit more hands on for the evening. I'm sure we can still provide the beer and pizza if someone is willing to hijack the evening with a suitable alternative?

Please let's have this as an open discussion and not all going directly through me - please can you reply (and subscribe) to this thread on TechMeetup Discussions Google Group (here) so we can email backwards and forwards to our hearts content. Cheers.

I'm going to TechCrunch too and not a regular attendee of TechMeetup,
but I'd reckon it's worth having a meeting as the crossover isn't
likely to be suitable for everyone. From 7.30 it's all a social
anyway.

Am I the only one who isn't going to the TechCrunch event?

 £60 is a bit expensive for an event that seems to be similar to Techmeetup.

I would rather use the money to go bungee jumping. (and I'll be doing that tomorrow :) )

I volunteer to organise TechMeetup if there are people who want to volunteer as speakers.

We'll need 1 or 2 speakers.

There is one speaker - Jo Walsh from EDINA/OKFN is willing to do a talk on Ordnance Survey Open Data, spatial databases, and maps.

I am going to be in Edinburgh on Wednesday, but I don't know if I'll be able to make it to Techmeetup. If enough people want to turn up, Techmeetup should definitely happen.

That does sound like an intresting talk.

A hack session afterwards could be cool, althought that may be harder
to organise as very few of us have access to the wifi in Appleton
tower. Maybe just the talk?
