Welcome to the Colorado K-12 Computer Science Connection.  This month's newsletter is your go-to guide for the latest events and opportunities in computer science education in Colorado.  For a comprehensive list of events and opportunities, visit the CDE's Computer Science page. If you have suggestions for items to add, please complete this form. Join Us- FREE Professional Learning Series - AI Literacy and More! 
CDE invites all K12 educators to join us for a free professional learning series focused on innovating instruction in K-12 classrooms.  Each week, facilitators from CDE and other organizations will lead engaging sessions on topics such as how to integrate the three newest computer science standards - AI (Artificial Intelligence), Digital Citizenship, and Cybersecurity.  Professional learning certificates will be available for all who attend. 

Who: All K-12 educators, educational leaders, and support staff (whether in computer science or not)
Where: Zoom 
When: Wednesdays from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Computer Science Teacher Education Grantees Announced
Did you know there are almost $400,000 in grant funds available with the Colorado Computer Science Teacher Education Grant?  CDE recently announced the recipients of the 2024-2025 Computer Science Teacher Education Grant.  This was a highly competitive process as CDE had approximately $395,668 available for this competition and received almost $927,816 in funding requests. State of Computer Science - Colorado's Report from Code.org 

Code.org's annual K-12 Computer Science Education Report is now available, offering a clear view of each state's progress and opportunities for growth. You are invited to dive into the full report and join our ongoing mission to empower every Colorado student with essential computer science skills. Click here to view full report.  


K12 Colorado Computer Science Standards
If you haven't yet heard, on May 9, 2024, The Colorado State Board of Education approved revisions to the recommendations for computer science.  Interactive K12 Computer Science Standards can be accessed here.  Highlights include K-8 standards being added, and three new standards for K12 - cybersecurity, AI, and digital citizenship.  Other standards formats will be available early 2025.

Quantum Education in Colorado 

Quantum computing is revolutionizing technology right here in Colorado. To celebrate all of the exciting developments, CDE is hosting QuanTime in Colorado in January 2025, in partnership with NationalQ12, the Colorado STEM Ecosystem, and CDLE's Teacher Externships program.  
  • Be a part of QuanTime - Join classrooms across the U.S. and world in dedicating time to a quantum activity.  QuanTime engages K-12 learners with activities that introduce students to quantum science, opening opportunities and pathways to quantum careers. Together, we can prepare America’s next generation workforce with the tools to succeed in the industries of the future.

AP® CAREER KICKSTART PILOT OPPORTUNITY FOR COLORADO SCHOOLS - CYBERSECURITY 
The Advanced Placement® Program (AP®) is developing a new career and technical education program, Career Kickstart, that leads to industry credentials and college credit for all students who want career preparation, whether they are heading to 2- or 4- year colleges, technical schools, or the workforce. Career Kickstart’s first pathway, Cybersecurity, consists of two AP® courses: Networking Fundamentals and Cybersecurity Fundamentals with its second pilot year slated for 2025-26 school year. Colorado teachers with experience teaching networking, cybersecurity, and/or computer science are encouraged to apply.
Key aspects of the 2025-26 Pilot
  • AP features including teacher training, educator communities, free student resources, and an end-of-year exam.

  • Students with qualifying scores on the end-of-year exam will earn a free voucher for test prep and exam for the related CompTIA industry-recognized credential (IRC).

  • Course alignment to Colorado Career and Technical Education pathway

  • Colorado teachers who attend the Career Kickstart Summer Institute can qualify for Colorado CTE endorsement (linked here)

Interested schools or teachers can apply for the pilot program by visiting www.careerkickstart.org, or using the quick links below. To encourage collaboration across the state , the application deadline has been extended until Dec 13 for Colorado teachers only. Session Description - Join us as experienced educators from Durango School district, showcase practical, real-world applications of AI tools in their classrooms. NEW CDE AI Webpage

CDE recently published a new AI webpage that will serve as a one stop shop for all things AI in Colorado K12.   Integrating Artificial Intelligence into K-12 education will involve a wide array of resources, tools and curriculum and this webpage will highlight just a few of these resources.  Visit the page to learn more about current resources and upcoming opportunities.

FREE Colorado Virtual AI Summit on March 28th - Register Now! 

The Colorado Department of Education and Colorado Education Initiative are co-hosting a FREE, virtual Colorado AI Summit to celebrate National AI Literacy Day with panels and learning sessions throughout the day.  The event will begin at 9am with a session dedicated to the journey of AI in K12 in Colorado, which will be a look into Colorado's Roadmap for AI in K12 Education.  Then, throughout the day, panels and sessions are scheduled that include students, educators, post-secondary leaders, business leaders, and CDE.  Each one is designed to "tell a story" of how AI is being used or is impacting education across our state. Sessions have intended audiences; however, all are open to anyone interested in attending. Two Cyber Education Events for MS & HS Educators in Colorado| April 18th

Colorado Cybersecurity Summit for K-12 Educators. UCCS is hosting a one-day summit to address how best to bring cybersecurity into Colorado classrooms. The event will cover key issues that must be addressed, including sourcing cybersecurity curriculum, educating teachers via CDE endorsements to teach cybersecurity in the classroom, and ensuring that your school or district’s IT/tech infrastructure can support the process.

Capture the Flag (CTF) Challenge. If you’re interested in applying what you know about cybersecurity or building your cyber skills in a fun, challenging and hands-on way – or if you just want to see what your students are up to when they play – join your colleagues for an informal Capture the Flag (CTF) Challenge. What is a CTF? A CTF is a cybersecurity competition or training exercise where participants use the provided cybersecurity tools to find corrupt files, vulnerabilities, text strings, and other system issues or weaknesses. Once this hidden information or “flag” is found, participants move on to the next challenge. The more challenges you/your team can crack, the more likely you are to win the CTF! This CTF will be run on EC-Council’s CTF platform – an industry-recognized system that is proven and easy-to-use, for beginners and experienced hackers alike. NOTE: The CTF will follow the Colorado Cybersecurity Summit for K-12 Educators.

Research Experiences for HS Teachers and Community College Instructors |Summer 2025 |Colorado School of Mines

Interdisciplinary Additive Manufacturing Research Experience for Teachers (IAM-RET)

Six weeks, full time, $7K stipend. Participate in actual additive manufacturing (3D printing) research with metals, ceramics, and polymers plus explore and modify AM curriculum. Modern AI-Assisted Robotics Research Experience for Teachers (MAR-RET)
Six weeks, full time, ~$6K stipend. Participate in actual AI-Assisted robotics research. Learn and customize curriculum AI-assisted modules (e.g., voice / motion recognition, color/object tracking, lidar-based perception, autonomous navigation). MindSpark Learning Code.org Summer Workshop - June 16-20| Lakewood, CO

MindSpark is the Regional Partner for Code.org in Colorado. MindSpark has served over 4,000 K-12 educators in professional learning with Code.org programs. This summer, they are hosting their secondary week-long professional learning in-person! MindSpark is excited to bring together cohorts of educators looking to increase their skills and improve access and opportunities for students in computer science.
