1. Xbox mods vary greatly depending on the model of the Xbox. And there are a LOT of models with slightly different hardware. Modding an Xbox is mainly done by flashing the firmware of the DVD drive in the Xbox. The flashing methods also differ greatly from drive to drive. Some newer drives do need a hardware modification to accept copied game discs. Some could be done only with software modifications. Information on how to modify Xboxes with different drives can be found at http://www.ixtreme.net/.

2. You can install a 2.5" SATA HDD into the Xbox with a proper drive bay (Which can be easily purchased on eBay). However only certain Western Digital drive models will work on the Xbox and you need to format the drive specially for the Xbox.
