Hi All...Is anyone using the Kamar Network users in their school? I'm interested in how well it does or doesn't work?

it is around using KAMAR to integrate into AD into creating, modifying and deleting users
More information around the feature is available here http://www.kamar.co.nz/104332
Creating user directories http://www.kamar.co.nz/103505

Would be interested to hear more from other users on this feature as well

It works a treat. If you have the user creation in AD correct Kamar will force AD to do the whole job - user account, papercut account, h drive, exchange etc. Additionally there is no wait as there once was for the tech to do all of this. Our password list has disappeared too. this was once an excel file that only a few staff could see but now the pw is another entry in the student details that any staff can see.

It works really well for us.

Two problems we have found
  1. we use the student preferred name as part of the account name - if that changes then sAMAccountName does not get updated
  2. there is a known bug that the students do not get added into multiple groups
Cheers,
Ian

Works quite well. Only problem we've had is the agent on the domain controller sometimes stops. We have a script that recycles the service everyday and that's fixed it. Creates a flexible enough set of groups and OU's that we can do what we want. Students and teachers that leave get disabled not moved which makes a bunch of things easier to manage.

If you want I can post the OU structure here, and an example of some of the groups that get created.

We’re also provisioning everything from KAMAR (AD, PaperCut, AccessIt..), with exactly the same problem of the service stopping on the domain controller at irregular intervals.

We’d love the recycle script if that’s something that could be passed on.

I'm looking at using it to populate a Mac server. Anyone using it in this context? [Filemaker on a windows server].

I haven’t looked at the Kamar network users functionality of Kamar since it was release as a new feature.  At the time it didn’t do what I was wanting so left it.

What I have done though is configured Kamar to export the students every night, then have a scheduled task run a script that I have written to maintain the users – create users, delete users, add them groups, create mailboxes, update names, etc.  This was in a windows only environment, but I would expect you would be able to do the same thing on a Mac.

Something else I forgot and is popular with our staff is that timetable choices also export to AD - these become groups which we use as email groups for each class in our exchange server.

Thanks for your reply Rob, and everyone else also

I would be interested in seeing your OU structure? also do you just run a 2008 -windows 7 environment?
We currently have RM CC4 and would like to replace it or somehow get it to work with Kamar (user folders and policies handled by RM), some of the tools available are very handy.
What do you use to deploy software?

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark and Rachel

Script to restart AD sync service is just a batch script set to run every night:
net stop KAMAR_AD_Server
net start KAMAR_AD_Server

We use Group Policy to deploy software, but are starting to play with App-V which is included in MDOP. We have MS Server 2008 R2 and Win7 clients. Virtualized on Server 2012 with Hyper-V.
