Hi,

Just putting this out to see if anyone has the Kamar Reception app and Brother QL820NWB printer working on a Aerohive wireless network?

If so what problems have you encounter in getting it functioning.

Anyone else that has the Kamar Reception app running in conjunction with the Brother QL820NWB printer on another branded wireless system, what problems have you encountered if any?

Look forward to your responses.

Regards

Heya Kent

I've had trouble with the Brother QL series not signing in to a WPA2-EAP authenticated Ruckus network, but it wasn't the specific you model you mentioned. The problem was that the printer wouldn't authenticate to the WLAN.

We ended up setting up a hidden-ESSID WPA2-PSK WLAN on a radio near that device to allow it to connect.

We have the same printer on Ruckus, created a PSK WLAN for it.  I didn't even try it on our other network.

I am looking for a printer to use with Reception that prints on inexpensive thermal paper rolls.  The school really wants to use it to give passes to students, and the labels will become quite expensive - we have a decent amount of late students each day.  Our current thermal printers wont work with airprint.  Open to ideas...

Do you have to have airprint?

And is that all that is stopping you using the existing printers?

We use Printopia to expose a couple of non-airprint printers to airprint clients (one-off cost of approx NZD$30 from memory).

https://www.decisivetactics.com/products/printopia/

But you need that proxy device to run it on... (we used a VM).

Thanks Pete for the feedback,
I suspect that I might be suffering from a similar problem with the printer. Have opened up a number of ports on the firewall to no avail, still have plenty to open, but a slow process so I implemented a work around prior to posting this.
The workaround was to have a unmanaged AP connected to our network that connected to the iPad with the Reception app on it and the Brother printer.
Works flawlessly, but would rather have it working through a managed AP.

I hear you Daniel on the printing of label costs, like you we have numerous amounts of students turning up late, it will be interesting to see how long we progress with the student labels.

I understand that the ipads have to use airprint to print?  I should have mentioned that we are windows based environment.  Have tried to get the POS printer running on Papercuts 'Print Mobility' which happily shares our Xerox Copier queues, but it wont share the thermal driver of the printer.

This is what the Kamar Reception app does so that the student can take the pass to the teacher in class as proof of signing in.

I asked Alumie form Kamar about some of the student sign in process which sort of ties in with the query at hand.

Her response is below with my questions.

Morning Alumie,

I noticed during the Student Sign in process it wants to take a photo of the student is there any way to disable this function?

Also noted the “Confirm & ……” button is greyed out and trying to select it does nothing. See attached photo.

A query from Sue our Student Office administrator, with a student signing in on the Reception App how does this interact with Attendance in Kamar if at all.

Does coding still need to be done in the Absence Manager?

Hi Kent,

The Student Sign in process requires a photo to be taken in order for the “Confirm” button to be available.

Our reason is to prevent other student to sign in for another one. A photo during sign in process will allow the Attendance Officer to compare and decide whether it is a valid attendance or not in the Absence Manager area.

Would you be able to advise the reason why your school would like to disable this function please?

We are open to opinions from schools. The more information you can provide us, the better direction we can take on this area.

About the interaction between the Absence Manager and the Reception area, you can have a look at this guide: https://www.kamar.nz/105713

We decided to make the attendance checking a manual process because of the reason above.

Again, please feel free to give us feedback to see what works and doesn’t work for you :D

I personally think it would be much better if the attendance and notes could show up in the Reception area... as the find and add in the absence manager doesn't always pick up all the students that signed in and out.

This was my suggestion to KAMAR about this:

Hi Kent,

Does the printer have to be connected to WiFi or do you just need to be able to get to it via WiFi from a mobile device?

I believe the Brother QL820NWB and certainly its predecessor the QL-720NW can be connected via their LAN port with WiFi disabled, but will then advertise AirPrint over their LAN port and if your WiFi infrastructure is appropriately configured will then advertise this over your WiFi infrastructure to your WiFi connected mobile devices enabling AirPrint from an iOS device to it.

We have three setup this way.  As long as you have a nearby LAN port.

Further if your Kiosk is an iPad there is a workaround for an iPad Air or above to give it a LAN port using adaptors as per this link:  https://www.gottabemobile.com/how-to-connect-an-ipad-to-ethernet/ which we are using very successfully.  The combination of the two gives you an iPad Kiosk/Printer setup using AirPrint just over LAN that is much more robust than one the relies on WiFi.

Turning on Guided access to lock the iPad into the app you are using and disabling automatic OS and app updates ends up giving a very reliable Kiosk that rarely fails.

Kind regards,

Craig.

+1 for Printopia. For the price its a good solution and works with the cost recovery systems as well as it causes the iOS device to prompt for username/password the first time a printer is used (with no app installed on the iOS device) and passes the credentials all the way through to the print server for the cost recovery system to use.
