Just curious for a show of hands of school still using Symantec on their school devices.

And for any schools that have gone full cloud, what are you using if anything as a replacement?

Is anyone using the cloud managed Symantec Endpoint? does the MoE licence deal cover this? (probably more of a datacom question)

Thanks for the replies everybody.

I'll reach out to datacom and see how we go about using the Symantec cloud as that's another virtual server I can get rid of..

Hi Simon,

Been looking at it as well as it’s one less server to worry about and this is what I got from Datacom last Nov 16.

The Ministry of Education is carrying out feasibility studies in a test setup in coordination with Broadcom, for the migration of over 2500+ Schools to Symantec Endpoint Security (SEP V15 – Cloud). However, there is no ETA.

I've already sent an email. Off, so will see if anything has changed in 12 months.

There must be some schools on here that have gone full cloud, if your listening, what are you doing for Antivirus/malware?

Hi Simon,

We are currently using SEP onsite.  Although we're not going full cloud anytime soon, this is kind of an end goal, and I was planning on trying out Endpoint Security policies next year (as opposed to SEP Cloud).  These are administered via MS Endpoint Manager, and as all our devices are (recently) hybrid joined, I intend to get a lot of our Group Policies migrated into Device Configuration etc, so this would form part of that work (we're already deploying a bunch of software via Endpoint Manager).  It might be that we have to wait until the next MoE-MS agreement (2021/2022) to find out if A5 licencing is going to be covered - I think this is needed to get the full functionality of Advanced Threat Protection - if so, ATP might be the way to go, to finally give SEP the boot, but I really need to look into this further next year to weigh up the options.  With A5 licencing, maybe we'll move our phone system into Teams too...

HI Simon,

We are still using on site SEP running on a VM. Happy to keep it going as we have space and resources.

Helpful for finding serial numbers of stuff. Save me having a reporting server lol

Response from datacom...

Thanks for your attached email dated Wednesday, December 2, 2020 9:55 AM

Our answers are given below.

  • Q1 : Ok, so are there schools currently running Endpoint Security v15 (cloud) as part of this feasibility study?
  • A1 : No, the MOE is testing it on their internal test setup.

  • Q2 Can we get in on this test?
  • A2 : We will inform the MOE that you are interested in getting your school involved in the trials.

We will forward your contact details to the MOE and request them to contact you directly.

Regards,

Simon Wright

The Ministry of Education agreement with Symantec runs until December 2021 and supports both SEP14 & SEP15 licensing, however with the change to Broadcom ownership we have found the licensing and deployment around SEP15 to be problematic.  We continue to work with Symantec / Broadcom on a resolution but with 2,500 separate school tenants in NZ their licensing model just doesn't support this.  We will be undertaking a review of end point protection in early 2021 and will post on here when we commence the work to enable your feedback on requirements.

Hi Paul,

We also run SEP14 but separately purchased as an independent school.  With the year progressing quickly I am curious to the MoE's plans in this area for when the existing MoE Symantec agreement expires at the end of the year.  In particular in any plans to move to SEP15/cloud managed and wondering how your review is going?

Kind regards,

Craig.

The Ministry is currently reviewing options around end point protection available.  More information will be available late June.  The Ministry has migrated our corporate devices to SEP15, but there is limitations to achieve this across the whole education system.  If you send me an email I am happy to arrange a time to provide additional information.  paul.stephen at Education.govt.nz

Any further update to this? I hear that the MOE is dropping SEP and instead going to pay for Windows Defender ATP? Some details would be great so we can start planning for this.

Hi Paul,

With Defender now included in the MS agreement, does this mean that SEPM is definitely no longer available at the start of next year?

Just trying to plan the work ahead to replace these as COVID has pushed the school year right up to almost Christmas.

Hi.

Due to Ministry policy around communications around school holiday periods and COVID updates the first Bulletin article went out today.

Renewal of Microsoft software agreement

We have renewed our Microsoft software agreement for another three years.

This continues to provide state and state-integrated schools with Microsoft 365 A3 licences, including Windows 10 OS, Microsoft Office 365, M365 Apps, Enterprise Mobility and Security, Minecraft Education Edition, and limited access to Microsoft Windows Server software.

The agreement takes effect from 1 January 2022 and runs until 31 December 2024

The agreement also includes M365 A5 licences and Defender for Endpoint for all school-owned devices.

Find more information about this software and the agreement on our website.

Microsoft and Google information sessions for school IT administrators

With Google and Microsoft, we are holding an online information session for school IT administrators and leaders with details of the new agreements.

The session will be happening this Wednesday 3 November from 3.30pm-4.30pm and you can register for it here.

These sessions will provide schools with an opportunity to ask questions, find out the benefits of these tools and what support is provided for these agreements.

Microsoft Defender for End Point will replace Symantec and will be available to schools from late this week / early next week via Datacom.

Was not really sure where to post this one but it probably sits best here given the security discussion above.

I read this interesting blog this morning showing how you can use Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (included in the new Schools' Agreemeent between MOE/MSFT) without the need to use MEM/Intune:

The author of the blog is a MSFT MVP (frankly, I'm in awe of some of the content he churns out) and has a step by step guide on how to configure devices to have Endpoint Protection with MDE, without the need for Intune managing the device itself.

Whilst I'd still recommend you explore MEM/Intune as the MDM for your devices, if you're managing your devices in some other way, but would still like to leverage the security benefits of MDE under then new Schools Agreement (1/1/22) then having a read of this would be a good idea.

Trust this is helpful,
Sam

Where can we verify that the licenses have been made available? I am not getting a response from Datacom and we’ve had a trial subscription so just having the ability to go into Security Center is not confirmation for us. Will it be listed under Your Products in the admin center as a separate line item?

@landyn as Datacom manage the licensing process on behalf of the Ministry, I trust you have raised your concerns with them so they can investigate further for you.

While delays are certainly frustrating, they are doing their best and it’s been a long year.

Warm regards,

Lydia

Except they are not available yet. This was announced on 1/11 and I'm still waiting for anything and have received absolutely nothing... Great job Microsoft!

Hi Marlon,

The Defender for Endpoint licences will show up in the products list. It will be the same location that you have shared. Other schools seem to have their licences. Did you fill out the form to request the licences?

Regards,
David.

Thanks David.

Yes, I did fill out the form. I followed up on 29/11 with a note telling them today is the last full day of classes, was told they had a problem and that it was going to become available the same week. Followed up again 2 weeks later on 13/12 since it still hasn’t appeared but no response to-date.

I see that the licenses have popped up overnight. A bit tight to have all SEP clients removed by Jan 1st.

Hi Marlon,

Yes, it is a bit tight but I think it is achievable. Do you need some help? It's great that you had the trial licence to carry out some testing - How did that go?
