Afternoon all,

With Windows Copilot announced and rolling out in the next Feature Update (CY23 Q4), I've collated a few thoughts for educational institutes that may of be interest as you consider the benefits/impact this may have in your school:

I also include a few links to the CSP required if you want to turn OFF Copilot for teachers/student Windows devices. The key point I'd make is if no action is taken then it will roll out to all users by default.

Cheers
Sam

I've also updated the post to include some generative AI prompts for the likes of ChatGPT/Bing Chat focused on helping educators and students get the most of our generative AI -these came from an MSFT Github repo.

Thank you for this Sam. Very much appreciate the heads up.

RE: the CSP, am I understanding this correctly that it’s an all-or-nothing choice (i.e. I can’t enable Copilot just for the benefit of using the Outlook enhancements but disallowing OCR in Snipping Tool)?

Also, your post says E3/E5 but I assume this applies to A3/A5?

Hi Marlon,

Yes, the CSP does appear to be an all or nothing approach to it for Windows Copilot at this stage.

Re: E3/E5 - there is no academic M365 Copilot licensing announced at this stage from what I can tell. The price is also likely to be a disincentive - USD$30/u/m on TOP of the current E3 license, so I doubt many schools are going to explore that.

It is technically possible to add E3 licenses to an M365 academic tenant (that usually has A3/A5 licenses in it as you point out) but the cost is really going to start to stack up.

I presented a keynote last month at the Tertiary ICT Conference and one of then CISO present made a very pointed remark to me about the absence  of academic licensing for M365 Copilot - which was very fair.

Hence the comments in my blog post - I doubt many schools (or even unis) are going to embrace M365 Copilot at scale in the current pricing structure, but they WILL see Windows Copilot automatically if they don't opt to disable it first.

Hope this helps clarify,

Cheers
Sam

Afternoon all,

An update I've just learnt - Bing Enterprise Chat is (BCE) is available in preview for M365 A3/A5 faculty users (won't be available to student). I've updated the details in the original blog post here:
this also includes some guides on how to turn off access to consumer Bing Chat so if you're wanting to stop teachers from using the free/public Bing Chat and asking questions based on your organisational data that you consider sensitive, you may want to nudge them down the BCE pathway....

Cheers
Sam

Hi All,

An update from Microsoft this morning - Copilot for M365 is coming to education on 1/1/24.

Same conditions as Enterprise - $30/u/m and minimum seat count is 300 so I can’t see this being something schools adopt!

Official announcement here:

Expanding Microsoft Copilot access in education | Microsoft EDU

Cheers
Sam
