Hi everyone

We have recently set up 25 old PCs as thin clients.

One thing we are not clear on is the licencing of the Windows 2008r2 server to allow remote
connections from the thin clients. We are currently running in the grace
period.

Does anyone know if schools need to install licences in the "Remote Desktop
Licensing Manager" on the server (can't find any licence codes on the Microsoft
licencing service
center<https://www.microsoft.com/Licensing/servicecenter/default.aspx>website)?

Thanks and regards

You need to apply for per-device licences most likely.
Ring Datacom who manage the licencing to sort out your options. You can go via the MoE ICT helpdesk 0800 number also

Hi Yvette

You'll need "Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licences" (RDS CALs). On the Datacom pricelist these are listed as "6VC-01251 WinRmtDsktpSrvcsCAL ALNG LicSAPk MVL DvcCAL" which are $14ea per year in the Non Core pricelist (http://www.moe.dsv.co.nz/downloads/Schools%20EES%20Non-Core%20Price%20List.pdf).

If you think you'll be keeping your 2008 server for 3+ years, you can also purchase the licenses without SA for $39 which is a one off payment and works out cheaper than $14 per year.

Brent

I thought it was open licence now and non-core wasn't charged. Hence why there has been no auditing requests any more for computer/server counts. Please correct me if I am wrong

Hi Bevan

Servers and some CALs that used to be non-core are now included in the "Core CAL for Sudents" and "Core Server Platform for Teachers and Students" categories, but it seems RDS CALs are still considered non-core and have to be paid for - see http://www.moe.dsv.co.nz/MoE_info.aspx and http://www.moe.dsv.co.nz/downloads/Microsoft%20EES%20Extension%202013-SSI.PDF

Datacom should be able to confirm this (dsvmoe...@datacom.co.nz)

Regards
Brent
