Kia ora koutou,

We have a problem where 5 or so (so far) students using Windows laptops encounter an issue where, on closing the Chrome window that has their school Google Workspace account signed in, the profile is automatically deleted from Chrome and they are are forced to sign in again each time.

It only seems to be affecting Windows devices, and it only seems to be some of them. Chromebooks and Macs don’t seem to be affected by it.

All student accounts are in the same OU, so I don’t see how it would be a case of policies applying to some but not all.

Any ideas on what might be making this happen?

Thanks in advance!

Kia ora Jeremy,

One possibility is that Chrome's "On-device site data" setting isn't configured to "Allow sites to save data on your device." You can adjust this in Chrome's Site Settings. This may explain why other devices in the same OU aren’t affected, suggesting the issue is client-side.

Thanks, Matt.

Is there a way that this can be changed from within the Google Admin console? I assume that it's an organisation policy that is the issue, as more than 1 user's device settings are clearly impacted

Thanks again

Thanks, Andrew.

Unfortunately, the setting seems to be controlled by the organisation for our students (meaning it is controlled within the Admin console) - see attachment for reference

But are all of the *devices* in the same OU (the devices themselves, rather than the students)?

Sometimes devices end up in different OUs due to the use of different usernames used to do the enterprise enrolment (if you're not using zero-touch enrolment)...

Is that screenshot of browser settings for a device that has been logged in under a school account?

If so, have a look at what those same settings are on chrome with a non-school profile.

Also, you may have ephemeral mode turned on

It seems it was Ephemeral mode!

I have changed the setting and we are no longer getting the issue!

Thanks again, everyone 👏
