Hi,

We a being pushed to put in a particular web filtering system that is being aggressively marketed at the moment. One of the justifications is that it could have blocked the live stream of the Christchurch shooting.

We are an independent school and not on N4L, we currently use ContentKeeper for our filtering.

What systems are others using? Do you use the new N4L Fortinet or do you use something else?

Regards

Keith

Interesting claim. Are they saying they could have done a blanket facebook block, or stopped the video from the various sites including youtube without "normal' acceptable use being allowed ?

I think that some of the people on our side are extrapolating what they think they know about the system in question rather than it being a claim made by the company itself.

Independent school here too and have moved to Fortinet during the last school holidays.  Seems really good on filtering and VPNs etc.

Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Cheers

N4ls fortigate and linewize together. Mostly linewize.

I think the new new n4l is snagging more vpns now as I'm getting more foot traffic when "I cant get on the wifi" students come in with vpns installed.

We are just using the N4L Fortinet.

As a side note, we had a site blocked, and anyone is able to go direct to Fortinet and have the site recategorised.

When you get a blocked page you can request the page is re-evaluated.  There is a small form to complete and you need to suggest the new category. It takes from 2-5 minutes and is done live.  Not sure if this is checked by a human or not.  The website was available on-site in about an hour.  This saves a call to N4L.  You can check a site category here https://fortiguard.com/webfilter.  There is potential that a student could recategorise a marginal site into an unblocked category. eg: teamviewer.com was in the blocked category 'Remote Access', but has since been changed to 'Information Technology' making it available.

We’re N4L filtering also.  Have our Fortigate switch over tomorrow.

Sonicwall locally. N4L filtering disabled. I don't fine tune, category based blocking, App blocking and limited VPN blocking without DPI-SSL MITM implementations.
Definitions updated daily.

N4L filtering turned off but Firewall is PFsense and filtering is Linewize which allows fine control based on users, groups of users, days, times and individuals devices or IP ranges.

Users and groups populated through LDAP.
