Does anyone know if a new volume license key is needed for Windows 8.1?

I'm putting in a query to Datacom to see if they know what the situation is. We don't get any license keys specified with the download information.

Yes new keys are required - should be available via the MS VL portal.

Haven’t successfully upgraded my laptop yet. No update in the store and the keys in the MSVL area appear to relate to retail products. (Sigh)

Hi Ross,

Have you checked under the Software Assurance tab in the VL Portal - you should find Windows 8 here, rather than under the usual Windows section...

The keys are at the MS VLSC.

The issue about not being able to upgrade to 8.1 is described here:

Specifically:

You might be running an edition of Windows 8 that doesn’t support the free update from the Store

Some editions of Windows 8 don’t support the free update to Windows 8.1. These include:

  • Windows 8 Enterprise

  • Editions of Windows 8 Pro that are installed by enterprises using KMS activation

  • Editions of Windows 8 that are installed using an MSDN ISO, and activated using multiple activation keys

If you’re running one of these editions, you can't install the free update to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 from the Store.

If you installed Windows 8 using an MSDN ISO, you might be able to install Windows 8.1 using a similar ISO from MSDN.

Otherwise, you might be able to perform a clean install. For more info, see How to perform a clean installation of Windows.

So you will need to download the Windows 8.1 .iso and reinstall using the new keys.

Tim Harper

I have just installed Windows 8.1 this morning, using the download from VLSC site.
For the enterprise version you need to download VDA 8.1 (Cannot understand why the named it VDA, but anyway).
The update ran fine and I still have all my apps, both metro and PC based. All my data is also still on the laptop
The update does create a folder called Windows.old which has all files in it (I have not checked exactly what it saved)
My idle memory usage did drop from 64% down to 40%
The hard drive also has more free space available,

Everything so far seems to be going well.

I downloaded it from SA, installed it and it took about an hour to complete the installation.

The name of it was Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

I have no idea what VDA 8.1 is and I did not install that.

No keys visible in the usual place (SA, Windows 8.1 enterprise) where instead there is a message telling you to call Microsoft.

A new edition of RSAT is required. The upgrade removes the W8 RSAT tools.

It was on the list - I'd not heard of it before either until I saw it there and decided that the "8.1" was a bit of a give-away clue!  The license key is also the same one as for Win 8.1 Pro.

... sent from my shiny new install of 8.1 on my Tela Laptop.

The only thing that hiccuped was the USB driver for my data stick.  I had to delete that and install the software again.  I had exactly the same problem with my Surface Pro too.

Looks like MS have pulled the RT 8.1 update due to it not working for some people:

If you're using a KMS server you'll have to install the Windows 8.1 KMS Key on your KSM Server also. Apparently it was quickly found that it wouldn't register 8.1 without an update of the KMS Keys.

I just checked that and we have no license keys showing there, or at Windows 8.1 Enterprise in SA.

YMMV some people may need to call DSV as we did.

FAQs here

I've got one computer that it refuses to upgrade (so far) - running the upgrade assistant on it. Probably driver issues.

So how to resolve this? I don't see the KMS key [nor MAK] anywhere on our MS VLSC ? not under Windows 8.1 nor under VDA 8.1 ???

Cheers!

Yes you do require a new licence key for windows 8.1.
I have done the upgrade and you have to activate the new installation of 8.1 with a new licence key.

OK .......

We obtained the KEY via Datacom - but - still remain a little curious as to why *we* couldn't grab it via the VLSC web site and had to go thru that hassle .... while others seemingly could download it just fine   [sigh]?

I guess I was lucky enough to have the keys on our VLSC page.

Our KMS server is running on a server OS so to activate Windows 8.1 I needed to load up the Server 2012r2 KMS key.

I follow these instructions:

I'm not sure if it"s related but our agreement is listed as expired under the agreement details page (Expired late 2012). Has anyone else got this?

This could be the reason why some of you do not see the VDA 8.1 (which is Windows Enterprise Edition).
Maybe the particular account your logging in with isn't linked to the newer MS/MoE agreement. You would be best to talk with Datacom to get it sorted.

Running a fresh install on a new SSD, all good so far, though never had troubles with 8 over the past year.

Also trying not to install Start8 this time round and forcing myself to use the new start menu...

yes ours is listed as expired too,Rang Datacom and was sent a spreadsheet of new keys which has the new 8.1 - 2012 R2 keys but all the existing windows OS/office keys are different which I can't get my head around? I have enogh licenses to cover half the north island.
Also without site access I have no KMS host key to update the kms server which is essential

Interesting.

Our email from Datacom has come back from them without 8.1 in the spreadsheet. Will email them back and try get it sorted. I'd imagine it's a case of getting the new agreement linked to our VLSC account.
