Hi all,

For those who may not have noticed, Filemaker 16 Client is now ready for download on Kamar's site.

You will also need to update your opener script if you haven't for a while, as the old script doesn't prompt to continue using an unencrypted connection. (I haven't enabled SSL in my case)

It now has a nice blue icon so easy to identify the odd client that gets missed in deployment / updates.

Cheers,

Matt

Interesting that the FM Server links haven't been updated yet.

https://www.kamar.nz/105188

Wonder if we'll be forcibly prompted this time?

Nick

I believe they are working on a couple of compatibility issues for server 16 and once sorted it will be available.

One annoying thing so far is a client running 16.0.1 doesnt show a username in FM Server Console > Clients

All I'm seeing is 'KAMAR Ltd'. Username is useful when closing databases.
Hopefully the Server uppdate or a future Kamar update reinstates this.

Something to be aware of for people running Macs is it requires OSX 10.11 or 12.

Hi Matt,

FileMaker 16 client on Windows has changed the structure on how it stores user preferences to conform to Microsofts latest standards,  which has broken the logic we have to update the Preferences username  (which is what you see in the Admin Console).

If you select 'Edit -- Preferences' when in KAMAR, you can manually change the default.

We will get this addressed shortly.

The other key change, that is also mentioned below, is regarding using unencrypted (or self signed SSL) connections.  FileMaker is being a lot more 'in your face' about sending data over the network that isn't encrypted.  Our old opener script is blocking the error from showing.   You can get around this by manually opening KAMAR and accepting the certificate alert dialog or,  download the new opener which allows the certificate to show.

Regarding FileMaker 16 Server.   We are still testing internally and will make this available for download later this month.

thanks

Kent.

Hi all,

Has anyone had issues in FM16 with the window popping forward? (some staff are complaining when they are projecting full screen video, other apps)
I'm going to take a guess that its when Kamar is left signed in and minimised and when the logon timeout triggers the application restores/maximises and comes forward.

Was this behaviour in the previous version?

Hi Matt,

When the user times out - we take them to the logon screen (initially) - then after a further idle time, quit them out completely.

In FM15 - windows were all within a Windows MDI window.  In FM16, they are now separate windows.   As a result, the idle timeout may cause a window change and it thus bring it to focus.   (ie.  the new window was hidden - now visible).

I'll pass this on to our tester and see if we can find a workaround.

Kent.

Hi Kent,

Awesome. I haven't had any time to test but Ill guess its timeout, unless there is anything else that could bring the focus forward elsewhere within kamar (messages?)

I do notice annoyingly that I now cannot use a machine when running a script like batching reports, even with Kamar out of focus using the ctrl or shift keys still apply to the unfocused window.
Ctrl I can understand (but would be nice if it could be disabled) - shift is annoying however.

Usually that means using a VM to do those tasks.

Hi Matt,

We've recreated the idle timeout causing the window to come to the front - however this isn't new to FM16 as we were able to recreate in FM15 also.

Regarding the Ctrl key - this is something KAMAR is checking for - I'll have a look to see if we can handle this another way.

Regarding the 'Shift' key - this is also not new.  I've a change request in with FileMaker about this and have just raised it with them again.

thanks

Kent.

I've also noticed on some clients, once the timeout window shows, you cannot minimise it (and it doesn't obey show desktop either)
Working on client machines I've had to quit Kamar to hide the window.

Minimise looks like its disabled when timed-out. :/

Arguably Windows 10 upgrades while automated follow a similar path - annoyingly removing tools like "Remote Server Administration Tools, RSAT", when you have to reinstall the exact same version again after upgrade.

But yes it would be nice if you could simply uninstall, then reinstall and all previous configuration is magically picked up, no admin required.

I remember each sub version of FM has its own uninstall registry key - it is strange they are all new installs. (We had a logon script to detect the installed version by reading the registry and would have to keep updating it each time a new sub release of FM came out)

I think the clients are like that because not all databases are/can convert to the new versions so you can run old and new versions of filemaker on the same machine at the same time. Doubt theres many instances of that tho and they should at least give you the option to uninstall the old as say MS office does

as for server, highly unlikely you are going to be running two versions on the same OS unless your testing your database on the new version before going live but really? with vms and containers Just lazy programming, on the forums they even warn you to delete left over folders after uninstall to ensure you don't have any old garbage interfere with the new server install. I guess it makes support calls easier
perhaps they all worked for adobe in a previous life who obviously get paid based on lines of code produced
now their installers are legendary and itunes would be a close second
