I have been using Chromecasts in classrooms for a few years. Suddenly this year I am experiencing regular disconnects from casting every 2 to 5 mins with all Chromecasts. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Hi,

Not here! Is one of your users frantically "stopping" every cast destination as they worry their content is on display?

Really wish Google would allow remote management of CC in CMC or similar, seems like such an obvious value proposition, I'd pay twice as much for a CC then!

Wish it was. Would be an easy solution. Just to add, I can see all the chromecasts in Google home, but when I go to the settings, the settings don't load.

From my experience that (not showing in home properly) is usually because the wireless system is not passing along all the service advertisements between waps correctly.  I would have a look at your wifi system to see if anything has changed recently or if it just needs a reboot.

Jeffrey.

I thought that, but more than half are chromecast Ultras and are connected by cable.

I would look at N4L, even more so if you have their over complicated\highly restrictive secure connect in place

If it is okay for you that your students are not allowed to cast then you can disable casting for them through the Google Admin Console additionally, all the streaming devices can be put on a separate SSID.

I've put them on a separate Vlan and problem solved. Thanks all

Separate SSID doesn't help unless it's on a different subnet, but that's what we do anyway (and VLAN for that matter). You can even arrange specific cross-vlan multicast forwarding rules through the N4L router or (if you're using Ruckus at least) an AP.

You can disable the student's ability to cast through Google Admin Console is a new one to me, but it doesn't help if a student is logged in with a personal account!

Apologies, that's what I wish to mean by a separate SSID to use a separate VLAN and have inter VLAN routing enabled.

Possibly unrelated but we have a heap of TCL TV's in the school which have inbuilt Chromecasting and Wireless Display support.
As of last week, the Google auth side to the TV's is jammed up so Chromecasting is also a major issue.

No word back from N4L yet either...

Sorry to be a pedant, but technically the different subnet isn't the trick - it's the different VLAN!

Ie if two devices in different subnets on the same VLAN can route to each other (because subnets are joined by routers after all), then the service discovery and application socket connections will work across subnets.

Inter-VLAN multicast forwarding, called 'Bonjour Gateway' in Ruckus parlance, will allow inter-VLAN service discovery between nodes, but the actual sockets can't connect at the application layer unless there is also inter-VLAN layer 3 routing occurring (either via a router or a layer 3 switch).

I didn't know about the CMC per-user/per-OU casting setting; that's a neat arrow for in the quiver :)

Hi,

I have had issues in the past with seeing Chromecasts on different subnets on the same VLAN (say, 192.168.0.1/24 and 192.168.1.1/24) but that could have been related to discovery or differently configured routers and not actually impossible, I just attributed it to that at the time!

Good to know it was just me :-D

If you want to have a look at hardware Clevertouch has full control of casting.
They're more than a low cost TV but if your looking for an interactive option this can work too.
The video link is a small demo.
