Google for Education - Access to Third-Party Applications is changing for users designated as under 18.

Sorry to give you another thing to think about in the final week of term and exam time but I wanted to check in and make sure you were aware of the new third party app access controls as communicated in the MSA email titled;

[Action Required] Access to Third-Party Applications is changing for users designated as under 18.

I know some notifications have been popping up as I have been working with schools already around this change

There are two major updates I wanted to bring to your attention:

1. Users designated as under 18 will only be able to login with Google to third party apps configured by admin as Trusted or Limited (happening now) or if the Admin has opted into allowing unconfigured apps that only request Google Sign In for users designated as under 18. To conform with Student safety and security guidelines.

• This means that any new third party apps not yet configured by admin will present users designated as under 18 with a block page with a request link. Users can click the request link and admins can review and then configure the app in the admin console via a new card on the dashboard. Users designated as over 18 are not  impacted by these changes. Note that this means in most cases teachers (assuming they are designated as 18+) will be able to log into new/unconfigured apps with Google but students won't be able to until they are configured by admin. 

2. You are required to  review and confirm access settings for third-party apps that are currently accessible to your users (configured apps) by Oct 23, 2023. You’ll do this via a guided experience in Admin Console, and if needed, you’ll be able to make changes before confirming settings. Keep in mind that you’re responsible for obtaining parental consent, as required, before allowing users designated as under 18 to access third-party apps. Since for many schools this means lots of third party apps, this could take time but you won’t have to finish in one sitting. After Oct 23, 2023, users designated as under 18 can no longer use their Google Workspace for Education account to sign in to apps you haven’t confirmed settings for.
