Hi jude,
It would be interesting to see the logs. Here we have no problems at all with a maximum of 5 child threads so my initial thought is that this is not the problem.
Thanks Andrew and Trevor for phone help today.
With the particular version of pfSense we have 5 is the default too but when I looked back at the backup config it had previously been set at 20. I think this may have been changed last year when we had trouble with slow internet and pages not loading. A new config file was saved on 22 Jan but the custom option "url_rewrite_children" was back to 5. The effect this seems to have had is to stop loading webpages when there were too many requests ie when the students got to period 1 and then for all class time. Once they left staff on site could use the internet again. I upped this to 20 and it was still not that great although better. Bear in mind we have 780 students using BYOD, COWS and effectively 4 labs as well as many staff so maybe the heavier use is why it doesn't cope at 5. Still got the system log filled with errors, but changed then to 50 and no problems for the afternoon - absolutely no system log errors so Friday will be the test. Will keep you posted. Will try to figure out how to get the log, Trevor.
Cheers guys - I appreciated your help
Jude
