Hi, I'm posting this to the techies group in the hope of 'crowd-sourcing' a solution. I'm sure one of you has solved this all ready!

We have a simple network with no subnets or vlans.

We have a unifi wireless network with a single SSID.

We have an Apple-TV with a wired (Ethernet) connection.

On my laptop I have installed the software Bonjour Browser so that I can see the available Bonjour services.

Observation 1: When the laptop is connected using wired Ethernet it sees some Bonjour services including airplay (from the AppleTV).

Observation 2: When the laptop is connected wirelessly it sees no Bonjour services.

I deduce from these two observations that unifi is not passing on the mDNS packets. How can I fix this so that devices connected wirelessly are aware of the Bonjour services? (Then the iPads will see the AppleTV)

thanks in advance
Alan

p.s. a response that leads me to a solution earns KUDOS !!!

One more thing, we haven't implemented 'Apply guest policies' on that wireless network.

Hi Alan,

http://avahi.org is an OpenSource solution which should advertise services between subnets

We haven't implemented this yet, but is in our plans

Andy

Hi All

It seems that a techie has solved this one by informing me that the default settings on certain AT switches configure the switch to block (not pass on) multicast.

I tested this by plugging the laptop into the 'other side' of our main (AT) switch from the AppleTV and then it couldn't see any Bonjour services (even though that was all going over wire). This confirmed his suspicions that it was the switch and not Unifi.

My apologies go to Ubiquity and Pete earns the kudos!

thanks
Alan

Airplay is the context I would be interested in, as we have Unifi gear as well.

The unifi gear has no trouble with AirPlay but I'd still recommend plugging in the Apple TV if possible on any wireless network or equipment.

Our site uses mostly Airserver on PC laptops to broadcast the Ipad on a projector.

Some users are experiencing dropouts, however this could be more a function of the wireless signal strength and other local factors than any of the gear.
