Hi all,

Reaching out - looking at refreshing our NVR/IP Cameras.
Currently use basic rtsp streams with the dedicated NVR doing motion detect/processing/transcoding. We currently sit in the ~22 camera range but could scale to 40.

Anyone virtualised?
ONVIF/RTSP with dedicated NVR?
Dedicated security network/switches, vlan?

We virtualized with 10 cameras and running Milestone, but it was quite processor/memory hungry and didn't like overwriting old video that well, but then I didn't want to throw too much resources at it. Once we went to 40 cameras last year, got a dedicated DVR. Works well.

I kept it on a private Lan, no internet, but got over ruled by management who wanted caretaker and EO to have remote camera access over Xmas, so I set up a router on a VM server. DVR wasn't really helpful at giving information, basically needed rebooting every time you change network settings for it to properly pick up NAT. Worked for a few days before something would happen and it knocked out our remote access. After a couple of trips to reboot over Xmas, decided without too much investigation just to stop routing, system has been stable ever since.

We have a about 6 ONVIF cameras, the rest all Hikvision and DVR is too. The HK stuff talks nicely to each other, but the ONVIF are a bit more tricky, still not sure if I've got them all working properly, not enough rain.

There's an HK app I installed on a dedicated tablet that is on the Vlan that the deans can use to view live or playback. Not a lot of documentation, but I got it working. Just doesn't have remote access (as I said earlier), but I don't trust HK. Great pictures, but possible back doors I don't want to risk.

We only have about 6 cameras, all ubiquiti, which works, but at the end of last year i bought a desktop Synology D920+ that supports 2 cameras out of the box and got a 4 cameras licence to get to 6, so far so good i like the ability to use pretty much any camera you want.
I got a couple of HiLook cameras (cheaper sibling to HikVision) to try out, setup was easy. Annoyingly you have to use IE to access the web interface one them! though once you have given it an ip and done basic setup, the rest is done in Synology's security software. IP cameras are on their own vlan.

Anywho, the synology solution is worth a look.

We use Wisenet Wave, switched from Milestone
Most of our cameras are HiLook
Have about 70 cameras between us and the performing arts centre
Using a ~10 year old server dedicated to this... was just an old one we had lying around that we repurposed
Only look at them when we have an issue reported... otherwise it just sits there recording... cameras do the motion detection and inform HiLook there is activity to make it start recording.

Hi

We have put in a IDIS DR-6332PS-S
We have all the cameras and DVR on a seperate VLAN that is dedicated to security stuff.

Access to the cameras is through a console in the server room. I will be hitching up a Desktop in the IT office so someone can troll through the recordings if required to keep people out of our server room.

Works well but have only had it in for 3 months, so far so good. Easy to use for newbies.

We have 50 something cameras on a Milestone. It was installed and
specced by Aotea Security here in Dunedin. So good to centralise and
get rid of the 6 different and terrible old DVRs, currently about
110Mb/s total incoming from the cameras. Two buildings are analog
cameras through Axis boxes and quite low res, they really need a
camera upgrade. We did have to put bigger drives in to get it to
record enough weeks to meet the boards' minimum retention policy,
current disk space is 51TB over 8 drives. Currently I think it goes
back to late December. We're on our 3rd server, the first was too
slow, the 2nd needed upgraded when we added another 25 cameras.

It's a 4 core Xeon @ 3.6Ghz

The best upgrade was to the newer version of Milestone with some GPU offload.

We're currently using a Ubiquiti UNVR, which was purchased this year to replace the server we had been using for the task; the software concerned was falling out of support, so an Appliance was the way to go in this case + the server was pushing 11 years, and I needed it for a different task.
26 cameras deployed, with 4 more to be placed in areas being renovated; a mix of Gen 2 and 3 cameras.

We mainly check the camera footage when a problem is reported, but the UNVR can also be used via browser or App like a surveillance station, which is handy in places such as the library or cafeteria.

In terms of virtualizing this solution, given Ubiquiti went the appliance route, it's no longer an option, but then again the price-point is very appealing; Go Wireless, a master distributor for Ubiquiti, has exceptionally good education prices.
There is also the factor that you don't need to purchase additional licenses, only their equipment, which works for me.  However, the remote access aspect is turned off, and we use Zerotier to reach the panel via an RDP jump box from the outside.

We use a rebuilt IBM M4 x3650, 128GB ram, 6x 1.2TB 10k 2.5" SAS HDD setup in a Raid Array.. about to add 2x 12TB sata drives as well for more storage

We run an onsite DVR - using Avigilon. all runs on a seperate network. 15 cameras all HikVision (onvif).. and about to add a bunch more... all do motion detection

Works really well, I can access from inside of school via client and works great with all views showing, also with property manager/caretaker viewing as well... and can use the mobile app outside of school if need.

Basically following the system which the local Eit uses.

We have a Unifi Cloud Key Plus and 21 UniFi cameras but are slowly migrating to Dahua with 10 cameras already installed.
Admittedly the UniFi Protect is far easier to use than the Dahua interface.
Pity the UniFi cameras don't support ONVIF...

Far out Craig...

What's the board justification for requiring so many weeks retention?
Our old ubiquiti setup and even the new one i only have set for 2 weeks.
Ive only ever needed to look at the footage may 3 times per year.

Also 50 cameras! are they scattered everywhere or is there more concentration around the hostel?

Simon Wright

In terms of looking at footage I do have a dedicated wee desktop in
the Gym Office so they can watch for mischief upstairs in the weights
room.

We also have a desktop in the assistant boarding office that they use
for sign ins and outs then they swap to a camera view to keep an eye
on things.

17 years ago the boarding house was rotating super worn out VHS tapes
for CCTV. LOL.

Reviewing footage here, it's me, or an export to allow someone to
watch footage to find an incident, but that's rare.

The boarding manager will watch his own footage via VPN and RDP from home.

Because holidays. What if something happens 22nd December and we don't
notice til Week 1 Term one? It was shorter than they needed, and
when we upgraded the drives it ended up being more than required. But
I am expecting to replace those TV res analog cameras, which will
require the space. There are about 15 over in Boarding, 6 Gym, 9
Library, several outdoor too. Couple in a trouble spot in a block...
etc..

Ok that's a bit to go on.

craig.knights:
Exactly the same, I have a broken laptop (no screen) on the same network as the camera's to watch the weights room connected to a TV in the gym office... as both security and 'glance safety'.
My retention is like 10 weeks :O! But that's just how much space there is (4x6TB raid5), only motion saved.

I have all HIK vision onto a Nuuo NVR, dedicated 'physical' network (using the 3rd fiber pair and separate edge unmanaged switches) and the NVR with two ethernet ports sits on both sides of the network so there is external access, as well as an app for Android/Apple. The software is just getting a little clunky in age.

Anyone heard of/use exacq?  https://exacq.com/

Ill look into Avigilon also.

We currently have a mixture of Hikvision and Axis camera recording to an outdated NVR that we are considering replacing with Meraki MV cameras.

We want something where the end user can access live footage from a web browser rather than something that has client software.

The lockdown during the CHCH shootings taught us a few lessons on shortcomings with various systems.

Milestone does have a web interface, but it's not great to use.  They don't have a MacOS client either...  so being a mostly Mac place, it's RDP and running the client on a Windows box...  meh.

Highly recommend Milestone. Running 2x servers, 60 days retention for the same reason Craig mentioned, with a few more cameras. We had endless issues until we upgraded to 2018, after they resolved issues with how they system buffered the recordings before writing them to disk. Had to reboot servers every 1-2 months. Now it isn’t a worry at all, despite putting more load on the system. If you would rather maintain the system inhouse, Milestone has a great online training tool to get familiar with using the management client. We have a mix of cameras but prefer Axis as they have been rock solid and only needing upgrading rather than replacing. A few bad experiences with Avigilon, with the higher end cameras needing a reboot via web interface to start streaming again, thankfully it’s not a power cycle.

We are moving into the H&S coverage that Grant spoke about. Just wondering how schools cover CCTV signage and if they have a formal CCTV policy in place?

Cheers,

Brett
