Hi All

I'm just wondering if anyone has got PaperCuts mobility print to work reliably? We have a linux print server running CUPS, PaperCut MF on a MacOS device and the Mobility print installed on a MacOS device as well.

The mDNS broadcast seems intermittent and often get an error while trying to add a shared printer.

When I do get the printer added and print using the queue nothing happens, the print job leaves the device and vanishes into thin air, the print queues on the mobility print server have no record of the job at all.

Their documentation is no help at all as it pretty much says install it and it just works......

ours seems to work reliably, but I'm unsure what I can say to help..

But we're only using a Windows print server, the same one that runs Papercut.  The kids add the printers using the Mobility client.  Works well across all the platforms (except the BYOD Chromebooks, but we don't have many, I just show them how to WebPrint)

The BYOD Macbooks there's a gotcha where they need to add a . into the username as the Mac defaults to firstlast and we use first.last

We used to use a secondary Papercut hosted on a Mac with Mac print queues, but the Mac client authentication would drive people nuts as the Mac queues are unauthenticated?!

Working fine for us, again windows print server with Papercut running on said print server.

The only issue we usually get is when students have VPNs installed and they usually have half a dozen installed and wonder why they have issues.

Hi Blake

We’ve had issues with broadcast/multicast traffic being rate limited on APs which have a number of clients connected.

This affected printer discovery via mDNS.

The workaround is to put the printer discovery records in normal DNS, rather than using mDNS.

Check out https://www.papercut.com/help/manuals/mobility-print/set-up/configure/discover-printers-dns/ for details on how to do this for PaperCut.

We first saw this issue with the now defunct EFI PrintMe Mobile, so when we migrated to PaperCut Mobility Print, just went straight for DNS.

Regards,

Tracy B

We also have explicit DNS records for discovery (from day 1); I would view this as the preferred approach rather than a workaround.
We haven't encountered any reliability issues with Mobility Print.

I'm having trouble getting discovery to work across different VLANs on Apple laptops (works fine on windows).
Apple devices on the same VLAN as the mobility print server see the printers but as soon as I move to an SSID on a different VLAN I don't see them.

N4L have opened ports 9163 and 9164 between the VLANS.
I have tried DNS mDNS and known host discovery methods and have got all methods working apart from to Macs.

Any ideas what might be missing in our configuration?

Thanks
Bluey

Heya Bluey

I use the Ruckus "Bonjour Gateway" service to provide mDNS service across vLANs (which in turn makes service discovery from PaperCut server to macOS and iOS devices work, as well as Airplay and some other applications). If you still have an on-site Ruckus controller have a look at Bonjour Gateway.

Hi Blake.

We "pushed" the address of the P/C mobility server out to the Chrome browsers & the P/C Mob client via our Google Management - as long as the firewall rules are in place to allow the clients to talk to the server directly, no mdns or bonjour gateway was required. This does mean that the devices need to be logged into their Google account, and have to have a) logged into the mobility client page, and b) logged into the print authentication page to release their jobs, but once Chrome/P-CMob client have provisioned the printers to the device, most apps outside of the browser can print to them, too.

D.
