Hi, one primary school client I have has transitioned over to Apple laptops and has not used their Windows Domain for some years (was Server 2008).  The school has a mix of iPad and now Chromebooks this year.

One of the teachers has asked about getting Minecraft Education on the Chromebooks but does not want to have to enter every student into the Microsoft side of things to access it (a quick read of the docs suggests that an MS Education Domain is required so assuming IDs must be setup there).

Are there options for allowing the school to continue using Google to manage users and sync up to Azure or do I need to price up a server to run a local AD setup and connect to both cloud offerings?

TIA

W

There are - first you set up SAML to Office 365, then you set up
autoprovisioning. https://support.google.com/a/answer/6363817 and
https://support.google.com/a/answer/7365072

Then you'll need to set up licensing, which is a different kettle of fish.

To enter a number of students into MS you can always use a csv to bulk upload them after exporting the relevant details from kamar without needing a AD domain.

Thanks James and Stephen, I will have a read through the documentation link provided. Stephen, I was hoping that things can be automated to allow the school a bit more self-management but I will keep the CSV option in mind.

thanks again crew

Hey William,

Disclaimer: I work for MSFT.

The suggestions above are good and make sense. the CSV file will work fine and I wrote a detailed blog about how to achieve this here:

If the schools are new to M:EE then this might be helpful too:

Long story short, you;ll definitely need user accounts inside of O365 (Whether they're created automatically from google which schools are doing or manually provisioned) and oyu'll need the M365 A3 licensing which includes the M:EE license. Teh good news is that this is available to your schools at no cost due to the national M365 A3 agreement MSFT has with the MoE.

Happy to be contacted if you have further questions - sam DOT mcneill AT microsoft DOT com

Cheers
sam

Thanks Sam,  I am looking to be at the school later this week and will have a chat with them about M:EE and look to block off some time to setup the ID sync shortly after that.  Hopefully, I will not need to get in touch but I appreciate you being there if I do :)

cheers
