Hi Team,

Anyone running a backup connection into schools, 4g, standalone or integrated with N4L firewall?

EBOP been hit a couple of times with Fibre cuts and having schools rely on coms via the net causes a few issues, last outage was over 8 hours, even if Admin can keep going to communicate to family's etc

** Not sure why they can't reroute via Rotorua or Gisborne when a cut does happen, but that's probably for a completely different forum!

Cheers,

Brad.

The only sort of back i have, which was used recently when our firewall went down, is a stand alone 4g router which has a data SIM that's part of the school package for our cell phones.
It was used just in the admin office to get them online, allow internet connection for the reception phone to field calls.

Adding 4/5G as a backup path on the firewall would be nice, though you would have to have some policies to stop the likes of students access as the connection would just get overwhelmed.
Though it becomes pointless if the firewall itself is the thing that goes down...

Thanks Simon.

Yes having it integrated might cause more issues! :) but plan would be to allow Staff and VoIP VLANS access to WAN2 (fail-over) only, this way admin keeps going, phones keep going, and with possible slightly limited speed (this would need to be tested and refined based on what solution is put in for the backup link) the school can keep operating, if the FW dies well umm I think your the only one that's had this happen ;) at the moment we get more Fibre issues than onsite gear issues.

Cheers,

Brad.
