Has anyone else had some really short but total internet outages like this recently?

Hi Team.

Yesterday (in the morning IIRC), and today just now we had a maybe 40sec outage on the N4L circuit, looked like this on our firewall;

It's like someone at the other end unplugged our connection and plugged it back in again.

Is this something that anyone else has noticed, or are we the lucky ones?

One of my schools commented yesterday that they have had a bunch of outages over the past week.  No evidence other than this comment, and I have not looked at it yet (or passed onto N4L to explore for them).

Maybe that's the same thing that was happening to the DNS queries on the link to the DIA's DNS servers on Monday?!

There also seems to be an issue (some N4L schools) about the school's external IP address changing briefly

Out of interest Kevin, the IP change you’ve seen is that for sites that are using their own Firewall with the public IPs on it or the big standard N4L firewall as we found this happened in the school holidays as well.

Cheers

Stephen

I assume that's a ~1 minute for you?
Haven't seen that here in the last ~30 or so.

Yeah, somewhere around 30-40 seconds, just long enough to notice.

I wasn't initially going to log it with N4L as the outages are intermittent and very short, but N4L have been proactive and noticed these posts and are on it.  Current theory is BGP related, they're having a much closer look at the logs on the Palo - the stuff on our side isn't set to alert for a sub 1min outage or my email would be flooded with false positives for things that are CPU busy but still online... :D

We have another short outage today and I believe those schools that I handled whose connection is under 2degrees are mostly affected. Wondering if the changeover to 2 Degrees is a reliable choice for school connectivity.

Hi all

We've used 2Degrees (and snap prior) as an ISP through a direct relationship for >8 years.. Have had no outages or support issues that come to mind.

Just 2c

Cheers

Hi Team.

After some investigation, N4L found that the ethernet interface going to the new ONT was logging unplugged/plugged back in at frequent but random intervals. The Cat6A cable used for the 5gbps uplink was the one that came with our new ONT, not one of our usuals. At N4L's request I swapped the cable out for one of our usual Cat6A cables (A Commscope in this particular instance, 1M and doesn't flex particularly well...) and over the last 36 hours the Palo hasn't logged an unplug/plug event since.

So, a good outcome.  If anyone else has strange things like this occur, check that you've used a really good quality cable from Palo to ONT and not what the installer left behind. <sigh>

Regards,
D.

I'm sorry 5Gbps? Here I am on 1Gbps like a chump.

But thanks for that insight!

Another one happened today and a brief drop of connectivity on 5 schools which I believe is under 2Degrees.

We saw a few in the Auckland region drop off after 11am but they all came back at 2 mins to 12. They did get a mention in the alerts page! It ends with "we will provide..." but doesn't seem to have any thing to click through to find out what will be provided. Perhaps it was a promise of another update when it was all fixed up, but we haven't seen any more trouble since then...
