Microcontrollers are small computer which are small in size. They operate at low frequency and operate at low voltage, Usually nanowatt. These can be programmed to specific objective and Microcontrollers are able to perform it.Usually Microcontrollers are programmed using C programming language. If you want to make a start in Microcontrollers then 8051 should be your first and basic choice.Microcontroller are very hard to program but, as experience upgrades you become master.
Where Microcontrollers are used .... ?
Well, Microcontrollers are used in Electronic devices such as your MP3 Player.Microcontroller are extensively used to in Robots, Microcontrollers are programmed to achieve a specific task. The best example would be playing a song file on MP3 device.
An ATMEL Microcontroller:

Well you might think you have seen this on IC (Intergeated Circuit) Boards.Yes! It's true.Microcontrollers are the major components of the IC.Without them your system seems to be cold system or in general non-working system.

When your electronic device consider your TV which is not displaying picture. If possible faults has been detected and the fault component is Microcontroller which display pictures to your screen is replaced which is pre-programmed.So this is why the electrical engineer charge you.The Company manufactured Microcontroller and General Microcontroller cost vary because difference in quality and programming.Well some concept will not be easy to grasp as you have to refer whole ocean for one thing in Microcontrollers.Well i guess you have got quite bit knowledge of Microcontollers, If you are going for Robotics then you will have to be mastered in Microcontrollers and should have problem solving skills. You can refer Wikipedia for more knowledge and to lean more about types of Microcontrollers.Well it will be hard to understand the concept, so first get yourself loaded with programming language specifically 'C'.
You cannot work with Microcontrollers unless you know programming language.
Thank You for reading as i know it would be a pain.
