Not OT at all matey, and I'm very interested. I've just spent a week heads down with Arduino and I'd love a good chance to collaborate and listen to whatever other people have got going on. one consideration though, do you drink (small quantities of respectfully consumed) beer? ;)

I know a few people playing with arduinos, I'll try to get them to come (I don't personally use them)

I was lucky enough to be at the Melbourne hacker space when they were drinking their own brew of beer, and think that might be a good project to get into (as an intro to further bioengineering).

Think I also put the wrong dates should be the 30th June and 1st July (this weekend-)

What Hoolio said - definitely not OT :)

I can't make it anywhere this weekend, sadly, due to prior commitments,
but I'd love to come down some time and say Hi.

I have some Arduino bits and pieces which I haven't played with enough,
so I could mumble about that a bit. And I can definitely talk about
homebrew, I've been doing that for ages :)

Cheers,

Tim

Much the same boat here unfortunately.

Sigh.i sense the hs will turn in to an arduino fan club like the others -.-

Don't you like Arduino - what's wrong with you? ;) j/k

I was thinking about this the other night, in the realm of computing
we use vbscript (heh), perl etc to "glue" different elements of an
environment together to make it integrated and harmonious. For the
relative layperson to electronics, and until Arduino, that kind of
power was out of reach when it came to the physical world; now it's
totally within grasp. Given it's so easy and so powerful, I can see
why it has become so popular, particularly among the maker community.

I'm curious, is there a reason why you don't want Arduinos to feature
heavily in a Hackerspace?

:) I think he was being partly ironic.

I'm planning an even greater nerd-sin by teaching music students to use arduino without writing any code. (using PDuino to just use the arduino as a dumb I/O board)
Maybe I can get that working by sunday and show you.

Oh I know I should force them to learn HC11 assembler. (but I'd have to learn it myself and I'm mostly a spaghetti-language user (meaning PD, touchDesigner etc.)

Rod.

Dunno if Nancy Mauro-Flude is on this list still, but she's done the
occasional hacker space from time to time.

I've cc'd her on this so I hope the Spaces can make contact :)

Yaay! I still haven't touched my arduino kit since the last time I did
some more assembly under Nancy's kind tutelage :/

I also saw this on twitter a short while ago:
http://www.indiegogo.com/hobarthackerspace

Let's make sure everyone is talking to each other! We probably already
*have* the necessary critical mass, if we combine forces.

i reckon  http://www.indiegogo.com/hobarthackerspace sounds great! I so hope we can manifest it.

if it doesnt kick off i'm still happy to open my place regularly as a no-infrastructure no cost alternative

ps.
i'm happy for all you arduino fans, but i've never managed to get that excited by it :) though the port of Scratch(TM) did almost get me to buy one

Not particularly, I've not used them and the one i own (from lca last)
is in a toolbox somewhere. But if you drawa venn diagram of people
who go to hackspace and people who talk about arduino boards there
is a very VERY large overlap. I'm a bit sick of hearing about people
flashing lights with arduino :)

Cool stuff with them on the other hand, I'd love to hear about.
thanks,
kk

Interesting project, hopefully you bring it along on a day I'll be able
