BCNC Job Posting: Summer ESL Teacher

(Temporary, full-time)

 

The Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, Inc. (BCNC) is a multi-service non-profit agency serving Asian Americans and the greater Boston community for over 40 years.  Serving 2,000 people with an annual budget of $4.4 million and programs such as preschool, youth development, family services, adult education, and arts and enrichment, BCNC has built a national reputation for providing innovative, high-quality programs that improve and enrich families’ lives.  The Oak Street Youth Center is currently seeking a temporary, full-time Summer ESL Teacher.

The Oak Street Youth Center provides year-round recreational, educational, and leadership development activities for youth ages 11 to 18 years old in a safe and supervised environment.  The summer program includes morning ESL classes and afternoon clubs and field trips.  Most of the youth we currently serve are Chinese American, both immigrant and American born.  Our overall goal is to build young people’s skills in all aspects of their lives—school, home, and community—so they can make positive contributions to their community.

Position Summary: Summer ESL Teacher

The Summer ESL Teacher is a temporary, full-time position that works with the staff and program participants under the supervision of the Senior Education Associate.  S/he teaches a morning ESL class for 20 students, runs an afternoon enrichment club, and supervises youth participants in the youth center lounge by creating a safe environment where youth can develop healthy relationships, get help with homework, and engaged in positive interactions. 

We are looking for someone who

·         Has experience teaching and/or working with youth

·         Is bilingual-Chinese

·         Enjoys working with youth and is outgoing and able to build rapport with youth quickly

·         Is firm and assertive with youth and is clear about boundaries between youth and staff

·         Is committed to social justice education and has understanding of innovative pedagogy such as project based learning and social action

·         Has at least a Bachelor’s degree

·         Has experience working with low-income immigrant youth, working in the Asian American community, and/or teaching English as a second language

 

Schedule and Wage

  • Part-time (10-15 hours/ week) June 20, 2011 to July 1, 2011 then job turns full-time (37.5 hours/ week) July 5, 2011 to August 19, 2011. 
  • Hourly rate is $16 - 17/ hour, depending on experience, and the position is unbenefitted.
