“Procurement of cheaper electricity for industries through Open Access in the State of Karnataka”
29th December 2020 | 12:00 PM to 02:00PM
Inaugural Chief Guest: Shri. Jagadish Shettar, Hon’ble Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries, Government of Karnataka
Today the Industries are under tremendous pressure due to COVID imposed lockdown. As per recent press note by MOSPI (Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation) Government of India, India’s GDP has contracted by 23.9% in Q1 of FY2020-21 as compared to Q1 of FY2019-20. To tackle this economic slowdown, industries are exploring all levers of cost savings. The Central and State Governments are working towards attracting new investments under ‘Aatmanirbhar’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. India ranked 68th out of 141 countries in Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) 2019 rankings, published by World Economic Forum. GCI rank of India is bogged down by some major shortcomings, such as a low rank (108th) on electricity related parameter. As per NITI Aayog’s ‘Strategy for New India @ 75’ report, power tariff rationalization is one of the key reforms required to improve global competitiveness of Indian industries.
To achieve both of these objectives, industries in India need to be made globally competitive by reducing their operating costs. Electricity forms a major portion of operating costs for industries. ‘Open Access’ could act as an alternate option to provide cheaper electricity for large industrial consumers. Electricity Act 2003 envisaged ‘Open Access’ as a tool to allow consumers to source electricity directly from power exchange, generator or a trader instead of their local Discom. Based on prevalent open access charges and cost of power, industrial consumers in Karnataka can save upto Rs. 0.80/ unit in electricity costs, by procuring power through open access.
Keeping the objective and considering the relevance of the program in terms of ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat’ and to resolving these barriers can help more consumers to take benefit of open access as well as increase overall cost savings and address issues for open access consumers, coordinated efforts are required from State Government, State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs) and Power Discoms. In this regards, ASSOCHAM Southern Region in collaboration with Indian Energy Exchange ( Knowledge Partner) is organizing Webinar on “Procurement of cheaper electricity for industries through Open Access in the State of Karnataka” ,29th December 2020 ( 12Pm to 1 Pm).
