Dear All,

Webinar Title: VUSSC Voices Webinar #5: Leading from Anywhere:  Youth, Leadership & Learning in the ODL Era

Organiser: Commonwealth of Learning (COL): Virtual University for Small States of the Commonwealth (VUSSC)

Chair: Dr Schontal Moore, VUSSC Adviser, COL

Date & Time: Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 9:00 AM PDT (Vancouver)

Registration Link:    https://bit.ly/44jbDdn

Presenter: Dr Gary Pluim, Assistant Professor of Intercultural and Social Foundations of Education, Lakehead University, Orillia, Canada will present on “Toward a participatory approach to youth work curriculum development”.

Dr. Gary Pluim is an Assistant Professor of Intercultural and Social Foundations of Education at Lakehead University, Orillia, Canada. He received his PhD in Comparative and International Development Education from the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. His scholarly interests include critical global citizenship education, youth voice, and alternative & innovative pedagogies. Gary’s current research investigates the intercultural benefits and challenges of sharing curriculum between nations, particularly among small states of the Commonwealth. Previously, Gary lived and worked in various educational leadership positions around the world, in the Pacific, East Africa, and the Caribbean. Recently, in partnership with COL, Lakehead International, and the Ontario Council for International Cooperation, Gary organized a Global Citizenship Summit for Youth Voice, Policy and Action that was hosted at Lakehead University in Orillia in February, targeted toward young people from small countries of the Commonwealth. Gary lives in Huronia with his partner and three children and in his spare time enjoys running, biking, and cross-country skiing.

Webinar Objectives:

  • To expand and strengthen alliances among VUSSC stakeholders.
  • To facilitate the sharing of experiences, explore responses to common challenges, provide guidance, and promote knowledge sharing and collaboration across Commonwealth countries.
  • To discuss the challenges faced by small Commonwealth countries in accessing high-quality post-secondary education.
  • To highlight how VUSSC addresses these challenges through collaborative development and distance learning.

We look forward to your continued participation and support in promoting this event.

Thank you and best regards,
Sharmila
