Hey,

I'm starting Te Araroa on the 15th of October and started to wonder
how to get to Cape Reinga once I arrived at the airport in Auckland :p
From journals I read, most people tend to have some relative or friend
that brings them to the place. I don't, though ;)
I saw a lot of bustours, but any bustour that I looked at, was driving
over 90 mile beach on the way to Cape Reinga. Well, I'd rather explore
the beach while I'm walking it so cruising over it in highspeed with a
bus is really no option in my opinion...

What are your thoughts on this? Are there any straight-forward busses/
taxi's/tours/whatevers that could bring me there?

Thanks,

Dirk-Jan

There will be a bus to Kaitaia I think. From there you can hitch to cape
Reinga. Hitch hiking was really easy on the North island.
..... don't ask me why ... but the further south you come the harder it will
be to get a ride. Up North EVERY car stopped down South ZIPPO.

I had the same query. Thanks ToeK for dropping the name of that
town. :)

Ahem, ah, could this be something to do with time on the trail? When you start off in the north you are probably relatively clean and fresh-smelling......

Denis,
Maybe, ;-)))))
But even the extreme refreshing bath of fording the Rakaia did not help :-(

I got a ride most of the way but did the bus up from 90 mile.
Depending on the tides, harrisons will either go up the beach or up
the road. I mananged to time it to get the road version. $45 including
lunch. Everyone heading up the road is going to Cape Reinga, but most
will be stopping at the dunes on the way up. I agree with Toek, rides
were easier in the North.

You can hitch with no problems to Cape Reinga.
You are starting very very early. Consider delaying it for at least a
month.
You are gonna tackle crap weather otherwise.
