I'm going to try and hitch up, I've heard of success (hitching from
Pahia to Kirikira was encouraging) otherwise I take an irish strategy
and do 90 mile to the cape from south to north and then hitch back.
I'll let you know???????

Hi Paul

You may be more successful in hitching if you identify your destination as Cape Reinga (approximately "re-anger")

Strictly speaking it should be referred to as Te Rerenga Whairua - "leaping-off place of the spirits", but many New Zealanders don't bother with that.

regards, and best of luck with your journey

I took a bus to Kaitaia and hitched up from there with a little "Cape
Reinga" cardboard sign. Only tourists have any reason to go all the
way to the Cape so don't expect to get anywhere too fast (darn
tourists in their big campers...) I had four or five locals stop for
me before I caught a tourist going all the way up. Budget half a day
to get there and some friendly soul will pick you up.
