Greetings,

The Navy's SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific is hosting the RoboSub underwater autonomous robotics competition for student engineers at its TRANSDEC pool on Point Loma, July 25-28.

The competition challenges student teams to design and build autonomous underwater vehicles capable of completing realistic missions. More than thirty teams from the U.S., Canada, China, India, Israel, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Russia, and Turkey will compete. San Diego City College will be one of California schools represented.

The event also includes a SeaPerch Program challenge and demonstration to stimulate middle school students' interest in robotics.

An open house is available for the media on Thursday, July 25, starting at 10, with Navy robotics exhibits and technical staff on hand.

I have included additional information below (and attached). This event is open to the public, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 25-28.

Hope to see you there.

SSC Pacific's mission: Enabling information dominance for our Naval, Joint, National and Coalition warfighters through research, development, delivery and support of integrated capabilities.

U.S. Navy sponsors student robotic submarine competition, July 25-28

Media open house, Thursday, July 25, starting at 10 a.m., with experts on hand and exhibits of current U.S. military robotic technologies

SAN DIEGO - Thirty-one teams and nearly 200 students worldwide will compete in the 16th International RoboSub Competition to be held July 25-28 at the U.S. Navy's research pool on Point Loma.

Competing for the title of Best RoboSub are student teams from the U.S., Canada, China, India, Israel, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the Russian Federation, and Turkey. California teams include Amador Valley High School, Gears 2 Robots, University of Southern California, and San Diego City College.

Hosted by the Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) in Point Loma, the competition challenges teams to design and build autonomous underwater vehicles capable of completing realistic missions.

Also featured will be a SeaPerch Fun Challenge, on Friday, July 26, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., an innovative underwater robotics program for middle and high schools students to explore and apply engineering and science concepts. SeaPerch demonstrations will continue on Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The RoboSub competition is open to the public and free of charge, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily. Spectators can watch the teams prepare and launch their vehicles for the competition. The event features a large screen display of the underwater action.

The site of the competition, SSC Pacific's TRANSDEC pool, is a one-of-a-kind facility that simulates an ocean of water and provides ideal conditions for research. Signs near SSC Pacific (driving South on Catalina Boulevard toward Cabrillo National Monument) on Point Loma will direct visitors to parking.
