Yes it is that time of the year again, and I'm not referring to Christmas shopping here. We are holding the 31st edition of the Jingle Bell 5K Snowshoe Race at the Paul Smith's College VIC on Saturday at 1 PM and the trails currently have about 9" of snow through the woodland trail system. The ground isn't frozen yet, but we've been getting snow nearly every day since November 7th here locally.
Our runners from Paul Smith's have made the switch from cross country running to snowshoe training, and we will be heading to Wisconsin for the US Snowshoe Nationals and the World Championships taking place on Friday December 19th and 20th respectively at the Ariens Nordic Center in Brillion, Wisconsin.
On Saturday, we will have a representative from Dion Snowshoes on hand with rentals of their racing snowshoes for $5/pair. I'm sure they can make arrangements for onsite sales too if you are interested.
For folks who are familiar with the VIC trail system, the first and final mile of the 5K course is identical with the start and finish near the main lodge at the VIC. You will head down to bouncy bridge across Heron Marsh and then take Woods and Waters up to the Silviculture trail. Mile 2 is entirely on the hilly Silviculture Trail, and then you will head back down Woods and Waters to bouncy bridge and then finish on the .4 mile uphill run to the start/finish area.
