Hello Lessig Techies,

I applied yesterday to get on the TeamLessigTech Slack team, but haven't heard back.  Figured I'd ask here to see what the current plan is?  I had an idea I posted in the Lessig Volunteers Slack yesterday and wanted to see where/if it lined up with anything you all were currently involved in.  I'll just copy/paste here, let me know what you think:

shawn.marincas [1:42 PM] hey guys, just joined here, was on the NY slack team awhile ago... had an idea for a Lessig campaign mobile app, wanted to see what people thought

shawn.marincas[1:45 PM]So my idea was an app you could download for iOS or Android which could take your current location and feed you current activity for that location... things like phone numbers and emails for local DNC chapters, Democratic representatives or other groups which you could click and be calling/emailing

shawn.marincas[1:46 PM]It could also have an evolving FAQ and responses for typical arguments against Lessig's platform to help individuals in their individual campaigning/debates (of which I've had a few)

shawn.marincas[1:48 PM]If we had a dataset with the above information (FAQ/Answers and relevant contacts/phone numbers by zipcode) I could probably whip up a serviceable app with Ionic/Cordova to be deployed to both platforms relatively quickly

I can get on a dataset with zipcodes / contact info for the current US Congress...

Look like this info is provided by the sunlight foundation via an API:

Free to use once you have a key.

Note, though, that looking up a congressperson by zip code isn't perfect as some congressional districts cross zip codes. Still, a good place to start.

Let me know if you want me to actually pull this data, or if it would be easier to just use the api directly within any app you create.

Hmm... good point and question.  I would probably prefer pulling the data, but for now we can see if we can use their API

The congress people would be good, but I think more important would be DNC members, news media organizations/members and other people that we would want to be messaging right now for this debate issue.

We also maybe other members of the Lessig team for a particular area so you can message for coordination.  When it comes to canvasing and getting signatures to get Lessig on the ballots, this will be even more important.

Ahhh, I see. Well, that's a substantially bigger lift. Perhaps something to get from the higher-ups in the campaign?

Yeah, the information isn't already readily available, but if we have a simple web tool to add information that we put out to the general group, people can fill the dataset pretty quick... we just need a starter set to use as a schema.

Relating a zip code or geo location to a specific district isn't an easy problem to solve, though I know some sites have already done it.  We can return to that later if it seems useful.

For now we can use that API/dataset to narrow to a list of reps by state, which should be good enough.  We can use it to have people calling their democratic state reps (where applicable) to forward their requests to include Lessig to their DNC contacts.  Perhaps they can be motivated if they feel their constituents will become disenfranchised as a whole if they continue to ignore him.

I'm not sure how it compares with Sunlight Labs API, but Google has a Civic Data API that's worked great for similar use cases - https://developers.google.com/civic-information/ .haven't read/heard much about it lately but it was great in 2012....

- Here's an example webapp: http://mapyourreps.appspot.com/ (includes social media integration)
change.org uses it for a similar functionality

There are more examples online of how others have used it as well. However it will cap you at a certain amount of calls

If we're talking html5/JS based mobile app builds here, these are worth noting -
