Hi all,

Attached are some maps, profiles and a Google Earth KML file with the route for the TDC 2017, as far as we have now tentatively agreed it, pending info on permits for passing through Long Chieng.

Cheers,

Rik

Hi all,

I asked Don from http://www.laosgpsmap.com/ regarding the security Situation in the Long Chieng area. He replied: "Recent travelers have been going along the road to Viengthong, however the security situation is not for tourists. Expect to be stopped frequently and asked for documents ect. If your group would are looking for this type of experience ?" So, it should be possible to go but with possible intrusion of Police...Unless you have already confirmed positive knowledge, I would recommend to check other information sources and get confirmation that the Long Chieng area is a "fun Zone".

Cheers

Wolfgang

Hi Rik,

here is an alternative route Xaysomboun - Phongsavan. Total 135 km, first 40 km on gravel road (went there by car - no problem) rest on 1D via M. Khoun to Phongsavan. Not sure how the Situation is in Xaysomboun.

Regards

Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang,

Sounds good. The problem is that we need to stay overnight beyond Xaysomboun if we want to make it to Phonsavanh in time for people to take plane on Day 3. That’s why we are suggesting to stay overnight in Tha Vieng, the only place between Xaysomboun and M. Khoun with guesthouses (as far as we’re aware of). Your route bypasses Tha Vieng I think, so it will be difficult.

Best,

Rik

Hi Lorenz,

As much as I would like to stay in LPB on the 12th, I think I will have to return to Vientiane on Sunday, as I am scheduled to fly to Phnom Penh the next day.

Best,
Rik

Toolz here, though I lost my job to a far superior wrench monkey, to say I'm overnight in lpb on the 12th too. Open to ideas for places to stay. See ya next Tuesday @6:30.

I’ll be staying in LPB until Tuesday and flying to Chiang Mai directly from there. I usually stay at a small GH near Joma 1 called Hua Xieng 2. They are friendly and price is around $25/night. I’m sure there are great places all over town but I don’t have any experience with others in recent years.

Cheers,
Ginny

I had booked the 13th March at 13.05 but cancelled. Here I'm in dilemma situation, might have to flight back at Xiang Khoang.

Sorry maybe it is just me but I don't understand what your dilema is. You may need to fly to XK instead of flying back to VTE?

I have booked Sayo Naga. Stayed there once and they were very cyclist-friendly and allowed me to keep my bike in the room :) It is nothing fancy but good enough for one night and it is close to the action.

Hua Xieng was booked :-( I am now at My Lao Home, also near Joma. Don’t know about bike friendly but prepared to take down the receptionist if they want me to leave my bike outside :-P

Here are the gps data from Long Chieng bypass that I found on my GPS map. Track 2 seems to be more remote and partly smaller (single track or cow path...). I do not know the track myself, no idea about the condition army Posts etc. But it would avoid Xaysomboun and Long Chieng....Happy exploring?!
