Hi Angela,

I read your thesis. I thought it was very well written. I will be going over it more thoroughly over the next few days. I will see your group in the next few weeks. Great job.

Take care,

Steve Turley

Dear Mr. Turley,

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I am glad you are willing and excited to serve as a discussant for our team. Our team will present at 5:15pm on Friday, April 17, 2015 at the University of Maryland Riggs Alumni Center. I assume your time frame for the day will be approximately 5pm-7:30pm, but I will keep you updated if anything changes or we receive more details.  I will pass along your information to the Gemstone program staff, who will send you a formal invitation with more details in the coming weeks.

I wish you all the best in your treatment and recovery and look forward to working with you next semester.

Best,

Angela Leasca

Angela,

I will be glad to serve as a discussant for your Gemstone Team Bass. I was the mentor for Team Kermit a few years ago. I am currently battling stage IV cancer. But, I feel and look great. I just felt obligated to let your team know just in case something would flare up. It is very helpful knowing the exact time and date- as I can work any potential treatments around your defense schedule. Good luck to your team as you prepare your thesis.

Thanks,

Steve (if you need to contact me- my work phone- 410-827-8056; cell- 443-786-6406)

Dear Mr. Turley,

My name is Angela Leasca and I am a member of senior Team Bass in the Gemstone Program at the University of Maryland.  The Gemstone Program is a four-year, multidisciplinary, undergraduate research program for honors students.  My team of eight students is currently completing our research on the endocrine consequences of estrogenic compounds in the Chesapeake Bay. We have spent the past three years conducting original research on the effects of estrogenic compounds, specifically poultry litter runoff, on Largemouth Bass in an effort to identify a window of sensitivity to endocrine disruption.  In the coming months, we will finalize a formal thesis under the direction of our mentor, Dr. Lance Yonkos.

I am writing to ask if you would serve as one of my team's five discussants for our thesis defense. Discussants serve as the panel of experts to which Gemstone Senior teams present and defend their research at the annual team thesis conference on Friday, April 17, 2015. Here is a brief list of what is expected of discussants:

·  Read the draft of the team's thesis, which will be mailed to you approximately two weeks before the thesis conference.

·  Prepare a brief written critique of the draft thesis to give the team at the thesis conference.

·  Attend the team's presentation and public question-and-answer session at the thesis conference (1 hour).

·  After the presentation, ask the team pertinent questions about their research.

·  Meet with the team privately (along with other discussants) for an additional hour after the thesis conference to provide the team additional feedback on their presentation and thesis draft.

My team is tentatively scheduled to present at 5:15pm at the University of Maryland on Friday April 17th, 2015, and we would really appreciate your support. Please let me know by Friday, 10/24/14 if you are able to serve as a discussant for my team. If you agree to take on this role, the Gemstone Program staff will follow up with all of the additional information you will need for the day.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Angela Leasca and Team Bass
