For Immediate Release

The “Cartel Cross”, a stark impression of a political and social epidemic.

On display at CHAC north, a 19 calavera (skull) cross that creates a narrative on the drug cartels infecting the US.

Denver CO, January 20, 2012 :
Fresh off a successful First Friday opening, Guerrilla  folk artist Rob Yancey wants to challenge your art sense with a provocative woodcarving.

The “Cartel Cross” incorporates 19 Day of the dead style calaveras (skulls) to present a narrative on the Mexican Cartel’s willingness to supply America’s enormous addiction to drugs and the ultimate carnage that ensues. The "Cartel Cross" is one piece in Yancey's Exhibit entitled "Mas o Menos".

According to Yancey:

"At the very top is the Sacred Heart with the words in God We Trust. The top skull is black with two handguns pointed at the viewer underneath is a pink skull with a Z symbolizing the Zetas Mexico’s, top drug cartel.  Beneath the Zeta is a turquoise skull with a rooster then, the flag of the United States and Mexico with the Virgin of Guadalupe.  There is a red skull below Our Lady with 35 painted in the eyes symbolizing the 35 bodies that were dropped off a bridge in Mexico City during rush hour.  There is a camouflage skull with a silver skull beneath complete with knife and Uzi.  Beneath the silver skull is a skull with the New Mexico state flag to remind us that this is a major storage and distribution point. The dark blue skull has a bomb painted on it with the bottom skull being light pink with dollar signs in the eyes.

I am not going to give you any more information.  It is up to you the viewer to form your own opinion.”

"Mas o Menos" and the “Cartel Cross" are on display through the end of January at CHAC Norte, 774 Santa Fe Drive, Denver CO. The gallery hours are: Third Friday; 4-10pm, Sat 12-4 pm.
