Hello everyone!

I've been working a ton with ValidateThis over the past several years and find it to be an invaluable library. I use it daily and when I google for answers I am constantly sad/disappointed by it's current visibility on the internet and documentation. Unfortunately they validatethis.org domain went dead about a year ago (?) as the project transitioned here to CF Team Advance. There has been some discussion about what to do with it but I don't see any hard action yet.

The docs are dead. The site is dead. That's kinda a big deal. I'd like to fix that.

I'd like to propose that I take over the project and domain and get ValidateThis.org back up and running with documentation and some basic example code ASAP. I am happy to leave the ValidateThis library hosted with CFTeamAdvance at GitHub but would like the freedom to host the domain and docs elsewhere myself (probably via Mura CMS).

My target for completing the initial docs and site hosting would be 2 weeks.

I'd like to hear what other think about this, especially if there is an existing competing sponsor here who wants to take over the project.

Opinions?

Personally if you are part of Team CF Advance, this is a good idea...I know Denny tried to get people working on open source project to keep them active and advancing. I don't know if he had a plan on how he wanted things run, or if others had plans, but to me, if you want to run it and keep the project updated and moving forward, I think that was the point of Team CF Advance.
I'm sure there will be a lot of people happy to see you pushing the project forward.

Once you get this project in a testing state you could hit up the team cf advance group for some testing, or get on the slack channel to get some help.

Others can comment on this as well, but I'd say go for it.

just my opinion

Hey Cameron,

Several folks had previously volunteered to assist with this project but, sadly, nothing ever materialized. I would welcome you taking it on and getting things back up if you have the time. It is a great project and a great piece of software, so it is a shame it has been lamenting.

If you need any hosting space or help with the domain purchase, etc. just let me know. I have both CF11 and Lucee 4.5.x servers I can set you up on if you need it and would be more than happy to try and get the domain and/or just pay for its registration. Just let me know :)

I emailed Bob a few times over the weekend as well about this. He seems open to the idea of me working on it but also wanted to make sure I included you guys in the discussion. Preferably I'd like to keep the same domain and just take it over.

I have hosting at VivioTech already and would just drop it up there on Mura. I'd also consider moving docs into GitHub in the same way that some other projects have done but I've not done that before so I will have to learn more about that first.

What needs to happen for me to be a committer on the GitHub Repo?

So I opened up a ValidateThis Slack channel for this.

I have obtained a site-scrape of the original site and am evaluating Octopress  (http://octopress.org/) for the documentation and blog platform rather than try to do it all on some hosted account someplace. This is the platform that the suite of Framework One tools use and I hope that it can get things moving quickly without worrying about hosting and setting up a bunch of stuff.

It can also help us make sure the domain and docs aren't vulnerable to being shut down unexpectedly again since it can all be hosted by GitHub Pages.

Denny-

Are you able to add me to the TeamCFAdvance GitHub Account? I'm not sure what all options are available at GitHub but I'd want committer for :

Or I could just do it all in a fork of my own if you prefer.

Hey Cameron,

Sorry for the delay... I've been a bit under the weather lately and haven't seen the keyboard or screen much.

I added a new ValidateThis team on GitHub and invited you to it - you will have admin rights over the two repositories.

As for hosting and how to manage the documentation, I leave that to your discretion. If you already have the space and a preferred way of doing it then I say go for it!

Thank you for taking this on. It is greatly appreciated!

Denny-

Fantastic! I'll try to check it out later tonight. As it turns out it doesn't look like Bob got too far with the documentation repo so I am probably gonna nuke it and start over. I'll post more when something visible surfaces.

I was out of town all last week on vacation so this effort took a little vacation too. I thought I'd shoot out a note to the group about progress on my efforts to revive the ValidateThis project.

I've converted the documentation and old website onto a new publishing platform but it still needs a good bit of organization and formatting work. I plan to get initial work on that done sometime this week and then put it out there for evaluation and comment / input / help from the community.

More soon...

Hey Cameron,

Thanks for the update! That's excellent news indeed. I'm glad to see some progress being made on that project and thank you, again, for rising to the challenge. Once you get it in a reviewable state I'll be more than happy to look it over and make any suggestions, etc... depending on where you have the docs and if they are accessible, I'll even lend a hand ;)

Cameron, Denard,

Ditto on willingness to review, do minor edit/formatting chores.
