Hello all. I have taught a few sections of a class entitled above.
When I came on to the staff, we added the LaVeist book.

I teach this "Diversity" class at the Community College of Baltimore
County in the Continuing Education Department. This class is part of
the accredited training for Medical Assistant and Sleep Technologist
training.

Course Description

This course is designed to allow the student to examine disparities in
illness and death rates in the US. Students will examine the
disparities and use Public Health Behavior Models to explain the
differences.

The syllabus we use is below:




Objectives

Students will be able to:

Identify the leading causes of death in the early 1900s and current
times.

Discuss why changes in leading causes of death have occurred in the
last century.

Examine difference is causes of death based on age, race, and gender
and economic status.

Explain why/how cultural differences affect the causes of death,
illness and participation in health care system.

Identify major components of the Public Health Behavior Models.

Explain how these components affect illness and wellness behaviors.

Identify major components of The Health Belief Model.

Explain how these components affect illness and wellness behaviors.

Discuss how cultural differences (age, gender, race, economics,
education) affect the health, wellness, illness and death rates in the
United States.



200 total points in class

Less than 75% or 150 results in a failing grade







Journal Discussion Questions

There will be discussion questions most weeks. You can receive a
maximum of 10 points per week for discussions. You are expected to
thoughtfully respond to the question. Points will be given for citing
the text and discussing the role of the Healthcare Worker where
appropriate. Late Journal Question papers will not be accepted.
Journal Questions must be 1-3 pages typed, double spaced.
