While I think that technology is the key to success as a nation, and
particularly in education, I see everyday the abuse of technology in
ways that are not appropriate. Studnets abusing the cell phones in
class--we don't allow them, but they find their ways to text anyway--
and the vulgarity of the Facebook comments. I think that we need
stricter rules, from the administration down the row, and strict
consequences for those who obey them.

The Google services are unlimited. I teach by using a lot of
technology--from Google maps at Earth Science to investigation project
design in Chemistry.

At the National Science Teacher Association conference I attended even
virtual labs. No need to get dirty, everything verified and making
sure the steps are in order. I am thinking to get some of those labs
for my new Forensic Class that I will teach in fall.

With that said, I still want the students to do calculations by hand.
I see how dependent students are on calculators. I love to see that
the newest technology resources doesn't display the teacher's role,
but it would enhance.

What do you think?

On abuses, I have to agree.
Students need to fully understand what they are playing with when
dealing with
technology. I have students 12 and under with Facebook accounts and
they
post almost anything and everything about themselves. They don't see
the
possible consiquences of their actions and that worries me..
We need to teach these skills as well...

OK, Here is my neighbor, fifth grade, asking me if I am on Facebook.
Of course, she is on Facebook, and she added me. After a few days, I
refused to have her on my list of friends. A kid should not be exposed
to adult talk.

I think that you are so right! I am enough of a luddite that I think
that you should have several years of reading, writing and math under
your belt before you get too far into technology. I think of it like
building a building - no good foundation - things can falll right
over, like this: http://www.zonaeuropa.com/200906c.brief.htm#012
