As well as teaching listening skills in new and deeper ways, we must
also create an environment that permits, even promotes, listening.
That means paying attention to acoustics and to sound reinforcement if
necessary. I would welcome anyone's experience with any of these
aspects in schools. The damage done by classrooms with poor acoustics
is incalculable... and I think this may be my crusade for this year.

That's an interesting perspective, Julian. Great idea. I'll see if I can reach my local school; they had acoustic tiles installed in the gymnasium and I'm curious about who had the vision to get that done.

My focus for the foreseeable future will be working on mindset... Resisting internal distractions to listen deeply for longer periods of time. I don't recall ever being taught listening skills in music class at any point in my life.

Thanks for doing what you do, Julian. This is important work.

Funny how listening isn't really taught in music.
In some cases we are taught the importance of 'playing the silence', but not much more.
Musicians generally learn/absorb the importance of listening as the years go by, and also learn to listen and play at the same time.
If we are really lucky we can export this 'tool' into our daily lives and appreciate the importance of listening in general.
As a musician I understand that the 'better' I listen the more secure and focused I am when I have to 'talk/play/communicate in any situation. If people are able to appreciate how empowered they become just by listening then they have a good reason to adopt the habit....maybe
Of course a good acoustic space will enhance this and enable people to actually hear what is being said...always an advantage
Only good stuff
