Hey Emma,
I've been engaged on some teacher groups on LinkedIn and found them to be wonderful!
I think that for the time being at least LinkedIn is a great place to really give the Listening group a big boost. I think you are already aware but I will list some benefits here;
- It's FREE! :D
- There are already millions of members on LinkedIn, and literally tens of thousands of them are in education and very passionate about this topic!
- LinkedIn has twitterlike sharing and following functions that will help the group to grow exponentially fast.
- Julian's presence on LinkedIn and TED can be further leveraged there to help more people learn about and share in our vision of listening sooner!
Some side notes on Google+
- It's blocked in China, who knows where else.
- I was an early adopter and subsequent bailer. Though the concept was cool it just didn't seem to get to the level it was hyped up to be... That was a few years ago though so maybe it has reached its tipping point already. It is worth further investigation at least!
Here are some other ideas you maybe didn't expect;
- WeChat Group. ( A free mobile app ) We can send free voice messages around the world and share on one group, or ten groups, or 100 groups. We can follow eachother's audio, photo and video uploads and make comments. I think it easily integrates with Twitter and Facebook as well.
Julian's TED talk really struck a chord in me when he said that wars are a result of failure to listen. ( I paraphrased that ) It really got me thinking. If we can create virtual spaces ( such as Google+ hangouts or WeChat groups ) we can bring people from all around the world together to talk about how life really is where they live, rather than just watch CNN's interpretation of the world.
Imagine if the average American could pick up his iPhone, join the Iraq conversation and ask people on the ground there what is really happening. Imagine if I could easily share with multitudes of people the joy and beauty of life in China. For people to hear the Chinese speak in their own words about how good life really is here... For us to share sounds of our everyday life from around the world... I wonder what the soundscape is like in downtown London? I wonder what it is like to sit and listen whilst riding on a camel in the desert? There are so many possibilities!
This kind of direct connection of speaking and listening between common citizens in different parts of the world will increase global understanding geometrically.
That's my two cents! Hope it helps!
Cheers,
Andrew

Subject: Possible Group Migration... Your opinions please!
To all group members,
We are considering moving, or trying to integrate the Teaching Listening Group into a social media site. What are your views on this?
Although we have been sharing ideas and information on the Google Group, it is hard to view any of this without trawling back through old messages.
A more interactive place to share and discuss would enable us better management of content, connections with other groups and people from a greater array of backgrounds, and also the ability to find out more about each other through profiles.
There are a couple of options, to move us to Linkedin or maybe Google+, although Linkedin is possibly more 'linked up' to a wider range of people at the moment.
I'm aware that some of you may not be on either Linkedin or Google+, and may prefer to keep it just as emailing.
Please let me know what you think.
Emma
